.KINGS QUEST 1: Quest for the Crown (1984)



Originally commissioned by IBM as a show-piece for their ill-fated PCjr,
Roberta Williams' King's Quest would become an industry best-seller the
following year when it was released for the IBM PC and new Tandy 1000
computers.  The game first started life as a protected booter with CGA
4-colour graphics.  Later versions featured 16-colour EGA graphics (the
first game to do so), better sound, and Sierra's iconic interface.

STORY:

The King of Daventry is nearing the end of his life. Tragically, he
has no heir to carry on the royal line, and he worries that his kingdom
will be left without a leader. Daventry is already a shadow of its
former glory, as the three treasures of the realm have been lost to the
ages. And so the king summons his bravest knight, Sir Graham, and sets
him on this quest - return all three of the lost treasures, and the
throne will be his. Not an easy task, but the recovery of the Mirror,
the Chest of Gold, and the Shield will take Sir Graham through mythical
perils and magical dangers, and forge a new kingdom from the ruins of
the old!

The remainder of this file contains information about the booter
version, but most of it also applies to later versions.

Starting the Booter:

Turn off Turbo before starting. After the game has started, you can turn Turbo back on.
This game can be copied using COPYIIPC.EXE but it cannot be run from a different disk type.

There are no drop-down menus or function keys

Hints:

1.  Before going anywhere, say "look plants", "look alligator", "look moat", "look castle",
    "look tree" to get the idea of looking at EVERYTHING.
2.  Pretend the bridge over the moat is flat. Cross it and go visit the King who is sitting
    on his throne. He will give you your objectives.
3.  The bucket is at the well. The bucket is the needed container to get water from the lake.
4.  The dagger is for cutting, not killing.
5.  The goat loves carrots, but don't feed it, just show it.
6.  The goat doesn't like heights, and won't climb. It drowns in water.
7.  The goat can't see the carrot when you're invisible.
8.  The garden surrounded by a low wall contains carrots. You can eat them too.
9.  The wolf can't see you when you're invisible.
10. The wolf is daunted by the protective spell, the magic shield, and the goat.
11. The elf might give you a magic ring. It makes you invisible but once.
