SYMPTOMS
========
When you attempt to start one of the programs listed earlier in this article,
you may receive one of the following error messages:
- MMSYSTEM007: There is not enough memory available for this task. Quit one or
more programs then try again.
- MMSYSTEM264: There is not enough memory available for this task. Quit one or
more programs then try again.
You may also experience problems when you attempt to play an audio CD, or you may
be unable to adjust the volume control.
CAUSE
=====
This issue can occur if your Windows multimedia drivers are missing or damaged.
RESOLUTION
==========
To resolve this issue, remove any of the following multimedia players that are
installed on your computer:
- Microsoft Active Movie
- Direct Show
- Direct Video
- Intel RSX 3D Audio
- Real Audio Player
- SoftPeg
- Windows Media Player
To do this:
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3. In the list of installed programs, click the multimedia player you want to
remove, and then click Add/Remove.
4. Follow the instructions on the screen to finish removing the program.
5. Restart your computer.
Repeat these steps to remove each of the multimedia players installed on the
computer.
If the issue continues to occur, remove and reinstall the Windows multimedia
components. To do this:
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3. On the Windows Setup tab, click to clear the Multimedia check box, and then
click Apply.
4. On the Windows Setup tab, click to select the Multimedia check box, and then
click OK.
5. Follow the instructions on the screen to finish installing the Windows
multimedia components.
6. Restart the computer.
If the issue continues to occur, one or more of the following files may be
missing or damaged:
- Avifile.dll
- Dciman.dll
- Dciman32.dll
- Mciavi.drv
- Msvidc32.dll
- Msvideo.dll
- Msvfw32.dll
- Wow32.dll

If you want to reinstall your multimedia players after you resolve the issue,
install only one player at a time. If the issue occurs again after you reinstall
a multimedia player, remove that player, restart the computer, and then verify
that the issue is resolved.
