This file will help you to determine which motherboard your system has. You MUST determine this before attempting to upgrade your Flash BIOS. It has also been updated to provide additional details regarding the motherboards. We do not recommend upgrading your BIOS without reason. If you desire a feature that a later BIOS has or if you are having problems that a later version of BIOS may correct we suggest that you upgrade your BIOS. There is however, no reason to do so if your computer is operating properly. Note that an interrupted or improperly performed BIOS upgrade can render your computer inoperable. If you have any questions or concerns about the upgrade process at all we recommend that you call Zeos Technical Support at (800) 228-5390 and go through the process with a technician on the phone with you. When you are asked for the BIOS part number, you are being asked for the number that looks like XXX-XXXX-XX, not the Phoenix or Quadtel version number. Computer manufacturers purchase the core BIOS code and modify it to suit their hardware. Because of this, the Phoenix and Quadtel numbers do not have any significant meaning, the later modifications were made by Zeos, not by Phoenix or Quadtel. BIOS tables have not been modified by Zeos to accommodate larger hard drive capacities. Upgrading your BIOS will not allow you to use larger hard disk drives. *** 486 Systems *** The Goose Board P/N 010-0030-XX --------- Processors Speeds 486Sx/Dx/Dx2 25/33/50/66 During boot, the system should show "Phoenix A486 BIOS 1.01", with a line below it which shows "Release 1.0xy", where x is currently 4, 5, or 6 and y is either blank or "S". The 4, 5, and 6 indicate the revision of the BIOS, and the "S" indicates if the SCSI chip option is installed. The footprint of the motherboard is fairly large, and has a large unused quadrant in the right-front corner. When the SCSI chip is added or removed, the Flash BIOS must be updated. Revision 1.04 - Initial release. Revision 1.05 - Fixes "floppy drive failure" messages with Sound Blaster or Sound Blaster Pro installed. Revision 1.06 - Added "VL Bus Mastering" Enable/Disable to CMOS for bus master controllers like the Ultrastor 34F VLB SCSI controller. Note SCSI counterparts have identical revision history. The files to update the Goose BIOS are located on the Zeos BBS in the Motherboards file area, sub-area VL_Upgradable. The files are goosXXX.exe and goosXXXs.exe, where the "XXX" is the revision number, and the "s" is the SCSI version of that revision BIOS. Due to limitations of the memory controller, only two double-sided modules may be installed, one in Bank 0 or 1, and the other in Bank 2 or 3. If one double-sided SIMM is installed, the other socket of the pair must be empty. Four single-sided modules may be used. Cache: Optional 128 KB or 256 KB secondary RAM cache. This is a direct-mapped write-through cache. Proprietary module BIOS tables have not been modified by Zeos to accommodate larger hard drive capacities. Upgrading your BIOS will not allow you to use larger hard disk drives. The Gosling Board P/N 010-0032-XX ----------- Processors Speeds 486Sx/Dx/Dx2 25/33/50/66 During boot, the system should show "Phoenix A486 BIOS 1.01", with a line below it which shows "452001x-0y", where the x is 6 or 7, and y is 1 or 2. The 7 signifies that the SCSI chip option is installed, and 6 it is not. The 1 and 2 indicate the revision of the BIOS. When the Adaptec 6260 SCSI chip is added or removed, the Flash BIOS must be updated. Revision 4520016-01 - Initial release. Revision 4520016-02 - Changed serial port auto-detection routines to avoid COM4 conflict with S3-based video cards (Diamond Stealth cards) Note SCSI counterparts have identical revision history. The files to update the Gosling BIOS are located on the Zeos BBS in the Motherboards file area, sub-area VL_Upgradable. The files are gosl-XX.exe and gosl-XXs.exe, where the "XX" is the revision number, and the "s" is the SCSI version of that revision BIOS. The Duck (Zeos / DEC and Occidental) Board P/N 010-0023-XX ------------------------------------ Processors Speeds 486Sx/Dx/Dx2 25/33/50/66 During boot, the system should show "Phoenix BIOS(TM) A486 version 1.06x" if the company logo below this line is "Zeos International, Ltd." or "Phoenix BIOS(TM) A486 Version 1.0x" if the company logo below this line is "Occidental Systems". The "x" will be the revision number of the BIOS. This motherboard can also be identified by the fact that it has the video card built on to the motherboard, with a flat gray ribbon cable connecting the 15 pin video port to the motherboard at J8 which is located on the edge of the motherboard next to the hard drive cable (J7). This is currently our only VESA Local Bus system to use 9 bit SIMMs. This means that it has 8 SIMM slots instead of 4. Revision 1.05(d) - Initial release. Revision 1.06(d) - Service release #1. To this date, all changes made in the Zeos / DEC version of the BIOS have had identical changes made in the Occidental BIOS. BIOS should not be mixed between the two types of systems (Zeos / DEC vs. Occidental) as it may not function correctly afterwards. The files to update the Zeos / DEC Duck motherboard BIOS are located on the Zeos BBS in the Motherboards file area, sub-area L_Upgradable. The files are decXXX.exe, where the "XXX" is the revision number. The files to update the Occidental Duck motherboard BIOS are located on the Zeos BBS in the Motherboards file area, sub-area L_Upgradable. The files are oxyXXX.exe, where the "XXX" is the revision number. When the Adaptec 6360 SCSI chip is added or removed, the Flash BIOS must be updated. There were some important features added to various revisions of the BIOS They are detailed as follows: Non-SCSI Revision 452-0018-11 - Allows use of non-parity SIMMs, removes VL-Bus Master setting in CMOS. Revision 452-0018-12 - Adds "Green" power saving features. SCSI Revision 452-0019-11 - Allows use of non-parity SIMMs, removes VL-Bus Master setting in CMOS. Your computer’s mainboard will hold up to six SIMMs of 32-bit DRAM. Slots must be filled in sequence from 0A to 2B. You must have identical pairs of SIMMs in each bank, but different banks can support various capacities and speeds. The mainboard will support up to 384MB of RAM. Note: SIMMs MUST ALWAYS BE INSTALLED IN SEQUENCE FROM BANK 0A TO BANK 2B, AND WITHIN THE SAME BANK, THEY MUST BE THE SAME SPEEDS AND CAPACITIES. Cache: You add Level 2 cache memory by adding a 64-bit Single In-line Memory Module (SIMM) into the secondary system Cache Socket on the mainboard. This optional SIMM has an access time of 7 nanoseconds. You must use a 3-Volt SIMM when you add cache memory. If you aren’t sure, contact ZEOS Technical Support before purchasing or installing a cache SIMM.
