TP 365XD - OS/2 v4.0 Unable to Configure PCMCIA Modem

SYMPTOM:
When a PCMCIA card is inserted into the ThinkPad, it appears on com1, but will not respond to AT commands. ATA gives a tone, however, no "OK" response is received from commands like ATZ or AT&F.

CONFIGURATION:
Thinkpad 365XD with OS/2 Warp 4.0 installed and trying to use the OBI 28.8 pcmcia modem (FRU 25H6420)

SOLUTION:
Configure the modem using the following procedure:

1. Boot the machine
2. When the machine shows the os2 bar in the left corner of the screen "press alt f1";
3. Select f6 ( do not auto detect any devices)
4. Open a os2 window
5. Go to the OS/2\boot directory by typing cd os2\boot;
6. Edit the "snoop.lst" file by typing e snoop.lst.
7. Put a ";" in front of the line "ir.snp"
8. Select file; then select SAVE. Then exit the file.
9. Close the OS/2 window.
10. Open ThinkPad features
11. Disable the IR support & check to see if the Serial port is disabled as well
12. Exit ThinkPad features
13. Shut down OS/2 Warp
14. Restart Warp
15. Open Command pormpts and select the OS/2 window;
16. Type debug and press enter; .... wait for the debug.exe screen to appear
17. At the prompt, type d40:00 and press enter. Confirm that the first line reads all 0s.
18. type q at the - , then close the OS/2 window.
19. Insert an IBM 28.8 modem or a PC Card modem of your choice.
20. Check Plug & Play under system set up and verify that the modem is ready.
21. Open hyperterminal, configure the modem (8,N,1 also set modem speed to at least 9600) and place the port setting as COM1.
22. Choose a known working BBS number, for example the IBM BBS.

At this point the modem will dial using the parameters you specified.

NOTE: When you tell Merlin not to detect any devices they will not be prompted in the future, even if the feature later installed.
