IBM Modems - V.90 Upgrade Status

Applicable to: World-Wide

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) agreed on the technical specifications for 56Kbps Pulse Coded Modulation (PCM) modems1 in their September 1998 meeting. The new specification by the ITU, designated as V.90, is an international standard which allows modem suppliers to design their products to a common specification for 56kbps modems, leading to improved interoperability between modems from different suppliers.

IBM's suppliers have committed to develop and provide IBM with code to upgrade the modems listed below so they will be compatible with the V.90 standard. Links to the download area will be provided as code is tested and available.

The following IBM modems are capable of upgrade to the V.90 draft standard at no additional charge:

01K1216 - IBM ISA 56K/33.6 Kbps Plug and Play Data/Fax Modem
If you've purchased an IBM ISA 56K/33.6 Kbps Plug and Play Data/Fax Modem 01K12161, you may download this upgrade package to add the draft V.90 protocol capability to your modem. After the upgrade is complete, your modem will still retain the x2 protocol capability. During modem to modem communication, your modem will try to make a V.90 connection. If that is not possible, the modem will try x2, then v.34 protocols in that order. Check with your service provider to see if they support V.90 or x2 protocols.

42H4321 - IBM 56K Modem Internet Kit
If you've purchased an IBM 56K Modem Internet Kit 42H4321, you may download this upgrade package to add the draft V.901 protocol capability to your modem. After the upgrade is complete, your modem will still retain the x21 protocol capability. During modem to modem communication, your modem will try to make a V.90 connection. If that is not possible, the modem will try x2, then v.34 protocols in that order. Check with your service provider to see if they support V.90 or x2 protocols.

04K0052 - IBM 56K PC Card Modem Kit
If you've purchased an IBM 56K PC Card Modem Kit 04K00521, you may download this upgrade package to add the draft V.90 protocol capability to your modem.

02K4196 - IBM 56K PC Card Modem/Cellular Capable
If you've purchased an IBM 56K PC Card Modem/Cellular Capable 02K41961, you may download this upgrade package to add the draft V.90 protocol capability to your modem.

02K4280 - IBM International PC Card Modem with GSM Capability
If you've purchased an IBM International PC Card Modem with GSM Capability 02K42801, you may download this upgrade package to change your modem to use the V.90 protocol instead of the K56flex protocol. After the upgrade is complete, your modem will not retain the K56flex protocol capability, although you can use the same upgrade package to return to the K56flex protocol if necessary. During modem to modem communication, your modem will try to make a V.90 connection. If that is not possible, the modem will try to connect using the V.34 protocol. Check with your service provider to see if they support the V.90 protocol before upgrading.

02K4282 - IBM International ISDN PC Card Modem with GSM Capability
IBM has entered into final testing of the V.90 code for the IBM International ISDN PC Card Modem with GSM Capability and will make it available to customers at no additional charge as soon as testing is complete. Check back here for the latest status.

1 Designed to be capable of receiving at up to 56kbps with x2 or V.90 compatible phone line and server equipment, and transmitting at up to 31.2 kbps. Public networks currently limit download speeds to about 53kbps. Actual speeds vary and are often less than the maximum. Complies with V.90 ITU 56K specification dated 2/98.
