Aptiva-PS/1 - Can I setup my printer if it is not listed in the Windows 3.1 Control Panel?

Applicable to: United States

Your printer will work best in Windows if there is a printer driver written for it. If your printer is not supported by the original Windows program, you may still be able to get a Windows 3.1 or Windows 3.0 printer driver for it. Windows 3.0 printer drivers will still work correctly with Windows 3.1.

Many printer companies have arranged for their Windows printer drivers to be put in Microsoft's Windows Drivers Library. To determine if your printer is included in the Windows Drivers Library, call Microsoft End-User Sales and Service at (800) 426-9400 Monday through Friday, 6 A.M. through 5:30 P.M., Pacific time. If Microsoft does not yet have a driver for your printer, contact your printer manufacturer to see if it has a Windows printer driver that it can provide. If your printer manufacturer can not provide a printer driver, ask if your printer will emulate a printer for which Windows already has a driver. Emulation is the least-preferred solution because it may not fully support all of your printer's features. On the other hand, it also may be a fully compatible printer emulation.

****** NOTE: FOR AMERICA ONLINE SUBCRIBERS:

Windows 3.1 printer drivers can also be downloaded from America Online. Follow these steps to find the updated printer drivers:

1. Select Go To on the menu bar.

2. Select Departments, and choose Computing & Software.

3. Select the Software Center icon.

4. Select the Search icon.

5. Type PRINTER DRIVERS in the search box and press [Enter].

6. You can download the necessary printer driver file for your printer.

After you download the file, it has to be "run" from the DOS prompt so that it can self-extract the necessary files. View the .txt file for complete installation instructions.
