Aptiva - How to create a standalone AntiVirus boot diskette

Applicable to: United States

For certain computer viruses, it is better to have a standalone boot diskette to clean the hard disk of viruses that attack the boot record or the system files. This diskette can be created or obtained in one of several ways:

A. If you have purchased the IBM AntiVirus program separately, you can create the diskette during the installation of the AntiVirus program. You can obtain the IBM AntiVirus program and subscribe to regular updates by calling 1-800-551-3579 (U.S. only).

B. If your system was preloaded with PC-DOS, you can call IBM HelpWare at 1-800-772-2227 and request that the Standalone IBM AntiVirus diskette be sent to you.

C. If your system was preloaded with PC-DOS or you installed the most recent PC-DOS Upgrade to your system, you can use the procedure below to create it.

Note: If your system has already contracted a virus and the AntiVirus program has detected a virus on your system, you can still use the procedure below to create the standalone diskette. Please note that the diskette that you create will most likely be infected if your system already has a virus, so be sure to follow the steps below exactly to first clean the boot diskette itself and then to clean up the hard drive.

1. Create a boot diskette. Insert a new or blank diskette in the A: drive, go to the DOS prompt, and enter the command:

FORMAT A: /S /U /V:IBMAV_BOOT

If you wish, you can create the boot diskette from Windows File Manager. To do so,

1a. Select Disk from the top menu bar of File Manager

1b. Select Format Disk... from the dropdown menu

1c. Select Drive A: from the Disk In: field if not already selected

1d. Enter IBMAV_BOOT in the Label field

1e. Click on Make System Disk to mark it with an X

1f. Clear the Quick Format box if it has an X in it

1g. Put a blank diskette in the A: drive and click on OK.

2. When the Format command completes, mark the paper label on the diskette with the following lines:

e.g.,
IBM AntiVirus Standalone Boot Diskette

Copyright (c) IBM 1993, 1994, 1995

Created for use with PC-DOS version x.x

(The x.x should correspond to the version of PC-DOS that you have, such as PC-DOS 6.3 or PC-DOS 7.0)

3. Now copy the following files from the \DOS directory to the diskette.

ADMIN.PRF

IBMAVSH.COM

IBMAVSP.EXE

LOCAL.MSG

SHSIG.LST

VERV.VDB

VIRSIG.LST

4. Create a CONFIG.SYS file on the A: drive. To do so, enter the following command at the DOS prompt:

E A:\CONFIG.SYS

When the CONFIG.SYS edit screen comes up, it will be blank. Enter the following line:

FILES=20

and then press F4 to cause the file to be saved and return you to the DOS prompt.

5. Create an AUTOEXEC.BAT file on the A: drive. To do this, enter the command:

E A:\AUTOEXEC.BAT

In this file, enter the following lines:

@echo off

ibmavsh

:getsp

if exist ibmavsp.exe goto :gotavsp

cls

Echo IBMAVSP Program not found. Recreate diskette.

goto :end

:gotavsp

ibmavsp a: * -one -nlog

:end

When these lines have been entered, press F4 to save the file and return to the DOS prompt.

6. Leave the diskette in the A: drive and reboot the system. If you are in Windows, be sure to exit Windows to the PS/1 or Aptiva menu and then reboot the system.

7. When the diskette boots up, you will see the DOS AntiVirus Shield being started, at which time you may be notified that the diskette has a virus. This would most likely occur if your system already had a virus when you created the boot diskette. Continue on with the rest of the steps, whether you encounter a virus or not.

8. After several other messages, you should receive a prompt:

Do you want to check only programs or all files for viruses? (P/A):

To scan only program files, enter P. To scan all files, enter A. It is recommended that A be entered to scan all files, especially if a virus was already present on the system when the boot diskette was created. This will result in a full scan of the diskette as well as all hard drives, which can take from 5 to 20 minutes. Doing a full scan will help to ensure that all viruses are detected and removed.

9. The AntiVirus program will now run, starting with the diskette in the A: drive and continuing with the hard drives. When a virus is detected, the system will stop and ask you if you want to disinfect or clean the virus. Respond with Yes or Y so that the virus is removed.

10. After the AntiVirus program has checked all drives, you will be at a DOS prompt again. At this time, remove the diskette from the A: drive and slide the tab down on the back side of the diskette so that it covers the hole. This will write-protect the diskette. Put this diskette in a safe place. It is recommended that it be kept with your recovery diskettes.

11. Reboot the system from the hard drive. When Windows comes up, run the IBM AntiVirus program. If you have an Aptiva, select Custom Tools from the AptivaWare group and then select Virus Checking. If you have a PS/1 and have installed IBM AntiVirus or a PC-DOS Upgrade, select the AntiVirus icon from the appropriate DOS Tools group.

12. In the IBM AntiVirus program, click on the Push Here button in the window to check the system. This will be similar to the check done with the boot diskette, and this check should be done to ensure that the system is free of viruses.

13. Next, select Check from the top menu bar and then select Check Diskettes. You can now insert diskettes in the drive to be checked for viruses. It is recommended that you check any bootable diskettes that you have, including the recovery diskettes for your system.

Note: If a virus had already been detected on your system, it is important to check all diskettes that may have been recently used on the system. This includes recovery diskettes, backup diskettes, installation diskettes for other software, and bootable diskettes, regardless of when they were created. For all other diskettes, check those that were used within the last few months. It is highly recommended to check all diskettes, however, regardless of whether you think they may have been used recently or not, since some viruses can remain hidden or dormant for a very long time.

14. After you check each diskette, mark it with a star or circle on the disk label so that you know it has been checked for viruses. If possible, put the month and year below the star or circle so that you know when the diskette was last checked. By doing this, you will be able to determine whether a diskette was checked by looking at it. This can be useful when you have a large number of diskettes that you wish to check. It will also let you know if you happen to come across a diskette in the next week or month that doesn't have the mark, allowing you to check the diskette before using it and thus providing you with better protection.
