Aptiva - Using CHKDSK

The CHKDSK command (an abbreviated form of the phrase 'check disk') analyzes the directories, files, and the file allocation tables (FAT) on the specified drive. It produces a disk and memory status report which is displayed on the screen. Parameters for the command allow you to fix errors found on the disk or in the FAT. CHKDSK also displays the volume serial number and label of the disk in the status report.
CHKDSK should be run occasionally on your system drives in order to ensure the integrity of the file structures. Doing so every one or two weeks is generally sufficient.
The FAT can be regarded as the table of contents for the hard drive. It keeps track of where each file is located. In some cases, CHKDSK may find that a cluster marked as being used in the FAT is actually free. Consequently, you may receive a message about the error detected and how much space might be reclaimed. Using the command CHKDSK /F will cause these discrepancies to be corrected and make that space available for use for other programs or files.
