CrossBrand - Uninstalling OS/2 Printer Drivers

Applicable to: World-Wide

In order to uninstall printer drivers, you must do the following:

NOTE: DO NOT DRAG THE PRINTER TO THE SHREDDER! It will not get rid of any files if this is done.

1) Delete the printer objects from the desktop by highlighting the object, then pressing the "Delete" key
2) Shutdown and reboot.
3) Open the TEMPLATES folder (Generally found the OS/2 System folder) and drag out a printer template.
4) Find the printer driver in the "Create a Printer" window, then RIGHT CLICK on it and choose "Delete".
4) In the "Create a Printer" window, RIGHT CLICK on your printer driver(s) and choose "Delete".
5) To install a new printer driver, select INSTALL NEW PRINTER DRIVER and reinstall the printer driver. Another method to reload the driver is to go into Selective Install and choose the correct driver for the printer. Now, this may not have the driver, depending on if the printer was released after the version of WARP, so the customer would have to reload the driver by following the README file on it. Also see (on the Web) for the latest OS/2 Print drivers, since many companies do not make OS/2 printer drivers:

ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/ps/products/os2/fixes/printerpak/english-us <enter>.

This site has the latest fixpack drivers for many printers (Laserjets, Deskjets, Epson, Canons, etc.

NOTE: If the drivers still do not install correctly, you may need to follow the first two steps listed above, then you may need to refresh the .INI files. To do this (after following the first two steps), you will need to:
Upon booting, look for the white rectangle that says OS/2 next to it (this comes up after the kb count screen). At this point, you will need to hit ALT and F1 simultaneously to get to the Recovery Choices screen.
NOTE: This procedure MAY need to be done after uninstalling the drivers if customer is not planning on reinstalling the drivers. This is also known as "Rebuilding the Desktop" (p.219 for Red Spine, p.218 for Warp w/ WINOS2 in the Warp User's Guide):

Then, for WARP 3, choose C: (Go to Command Line);
For WARP 4, choose F2 (Go to Command Line);
When the prompt comes up, you will need to type
- CD OS2 <enter>
- At the C:\OS2 prompt, type:
- MAKEINI OS2.INI INI.RC <enter>
It should come back saying MAKEINI.EXE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED.
- MAKEINI OS2SYS.INI INISYS.RC <enter>
It should come back saying MAKEINI.EXE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED.
- ATTRIB -H -S -R \WP?ROOT.?SF <enter>
- DEL \WP?ROOT.?SF <enter>
- Restart the computer

Then you can follow the rest of the steps listed above to delete the printer (and recreate if need be).

IF YOU NEED TO REMOVE FROM COMMAND LINE
The drivers under OS/2 are contained in the OS2\DLL directory. You can manually remove these but you will need to follow steps 1 and 2 listed above and then go into the OS2\DLL directory and rename the file to a .OLD or .BAD extension. Also, you will have references to the printer in the SPOOL directory, if present, and perhaps under either PRINT or PCPRINT directories. Now, the LPT or COM ports may not be available for the printers, since they may still be referenced. Check for .SPL or .STD files in these subdirectories and delete them as well. You should then be able to assign them to something else (printer, modem, ZIP drive, etc.). You will also most likely then need to follow the above procedure for the MAKEINI in order to get rid of references to the printers in these files.

NOTE: In some instances, you may need to perform a destructive MAKEINI in order to clear up any further issues, if the "Rebuilding the Desktop" procedure does not appear to fix the problems (see "Recovering the User .INI Files", p.221 for Warp Red, p.220 for Warp w/ WINOS2).

To do a destructive MAKEINI:

Type CD OS2 <enter>
At that prompt, type:
ATTRIB -H -S -R OS2*.INI <enter>
REN OS2.INI OS2.OLD <enter>
MAKEINI OS2.INI INI.RC <enter>
REN OS2SYS.INI OS2SYS.OLD <enter>
MAKEINI OS2SYS.INI INISYS.RC <enter>
then CTRL/ALT/DEL to restart.

UNINSTALLING PRINT DRIVERS IN WINOS2
Go into a WINOS2 Full Screen and go into either Print Manager (if enabled), or the Printer icon from the Control Panel. Simply highlight the printer driver that you want to uninstall, then choose REMOVE from the list on the right.

For Command Line removal under WINOS2, the drivers are contained in:
FOR WARP RED (and Red Connect)- the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory;
FOR WARP WITH WINOS2 (can be Connect as well) - the OS2\MDOS\WINOS2\SYSTEM contains these drivers. However, you will most likely have to check the WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI for references to these drivers and remark them out before rebooting.
