Aptiva - How to create icons in OS/2

Applicable to: World-Wide

OS/2 is a versatile operating system with a rich, full-featured user interface. There are several ways to create icons based on the type of icon being created.
One of the easiest ways is to right-click an icon of the same type as the one you would like to create. For instance, if you would like to create a new folder find and right-click on an existing folder. Choose "Create Another ->" and click Folder.

To create a program icon:

Right-click on a program and choose "Create Another ->"

Click "Program"

The following dialog box will be displayed. Click the button labeled "Create".

The Settings Notebook for the new icon is displayed. Type the path to the program or click "Find" to have OS/2 search for and display programs for you:

Click on the General tab. Type in a Title for the icon - usually the name of the program is used.

Close the Settings box by double-clicking the close icon in the upper left-hand corner. The new icon appears.

Another powerful feature of OS/2 is the option to create and use Templates.

To create an icon from a Template:

Double click OS/2 System and then double click to open the Templates folder. Here you will find templates to create all kinds of icons.

Find the Program template and use the right mouse button to drag it to the desktop.

The Settings notebook for the new program icon will be displayed as above. Fill in the path to the program (or click the Find button to have OS/2 find programs for you); click the General tab and fill in the program name in the Title section.

For more information, see the OS/2 Tutorial in the Information icon on the desktop. Choose the section on "Objects."
