Aptiva - Using the PC-DOS 6.3 Editor

In PC-DOS 6.3, the E editor is available for editing text files. E is a full-screen text editor, somewhat similar to the MS-DOS EDIT command, but providing more functions that can help to simplify and enhance text editing.
When the E editor is in use, press the F1 key to view the list of shortcut keys, commands, functions, and other features that are available. You can also check the description of the E command in the PC-DOS 6.3 User's guide for more detailed information. For Aptiva owners, refer to Chapter 7, page 141 of your IBM PC DOS / Microsoft Windows User's Guide for more detail on using this editor.
One of the Function keys (F2 - Save) will allow you to save the contents of the file while you are editing and then continue to edit the file. The F4 key (File) will save any changes that you've made to the file and return you to the DOS prompt.
Using F8, you can enter the name of another file you wish to view. If you wish to switch between two files that you've opened for editing, use the F12 key for a fast switch. If you wish to see both files on the screen at the same time, press ALT-H to open a 2nd window for viewing the current file, then press F12 to put the second file in the window, allowing you to view and edit both files in one screen. If you wish, you can open up 2 or more files and view up to 4 files on the screen at once.
You can select lines in one file and copy or move them to another file that you're editing, as well as copy or move the lines to another locating in the file you're editing. In the line just above the bottom line showing the name of the file, you can enter search commands for locating text. You can also use the change command in that line for changing each instance of a certain string of text to another, or change all occurrences of the specified text to a new string of characters.
The above are but a few of the extensive number of options that the E editor provides. The Help option (or F1) in the editor can provide more information about all the options, commands, and manipulations that you can do. Note: There are 15 to 20 help screens needed to briefly describe all shortcut keystrokes, commands, and other options. This can seem overwhelming when first viewed, but a quick scan of each screen will provide you with a glimpse of the power of the E editor.
