Aptiva - FAQs for SoundBlaster AWE64 Value and IBM 56K Modem Internet Kit
Applicable to: United States, Canada
Q. Can I keep the combination soundcard/modem currently in my computer and disable only the sound or modem functions?
A. No, it is recommended that the combination soundcard/modem and the associated drivers be uninstalled completely. The cardÆs drivers should be uninstalled first and then the card removed from the computer next. Once this has been done, you will lose modem and audio functions and another soundcard and modem must be installed to gain back those functions. If youÆd like to download the instructions required to uninstall the cardÆs drivers and the card from your computer, please check the FAQ at the bottom of this page for instructions or click here.

Q. I uninstalled the combination soundcard/modem and itÆs associated drivers and replaced it with the IBM 56K Modem Internet Kit. Now none of my dial up objects to get on the internet seem to be working.
A. You will need to edit the dial up objects which were created when your old combination soundcard/modem was installed in your computer. Now that a new modem has been installed in its place, you will need to point your dial up object to the new modem on the com port which it was installed. For information on how to change the settings, refer to the online help documentation that came with the dial up object or contact your internet service provider for which you are using the dial up object.
Q. I uninstalled the combination soundcard/modem and itÆs associated drivers and replaced it with the SoundBlaster AWE64 Value Kit. Now I no longer hear any sound when I try to play any of my games or programs.
A. When your games or programs were initially installed, they were most likely setup to work with the combination soundcard/modem that you had in your system at the time. Now that you have a new soundcard you will need to re-run setup and select your new soundcard and settings within that game or program. Please refer to the documentation that came with your game or program to correctly setup your new soundcard.
Q. I installed the IBM 56K Modem Internet Kit and I canÆt connect above 33.6Kbps.
A. You need to ensure that the number your modem is dialing to reach your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is a 56K x2 line. The IBM 56K Modem Internet Kit is compatible with the x2 protocol. If you are unsure about protocol compatibility, please contact your ISP.
Q. I've checked with my Internet Service Provider (ISP) and I am told that I am dialing a 56K x2 line and that I should be connecting at speeds in the high 30s or low 40s but I am not. Why?
A. There are many factors that could inhibit a sustained connect speed above 26.4 or 33.6Kbps: The condition of your telephone lines; the distance between you and the nearest telephone switch; your Internet Service Provider (ISP); the protocol used to connect the two modems (your modem and the one youÆre trying to connect with); and whether or not your telephone line is being routed through a line concentrator in your neighborhood or apartment complex. There are also many other pieces of the telephone company circuit that can affect your connections, such as computer switching equipment, filters, load coils and pads which may impede the x2 connection. Your local telephone company may be able to give you more information on the condition of the telephone lines in your area.
Q. Is there a telephone line test that I can use to check my telephone lines?
A. Yes, the 3Com telephone line test URL can be found at: http://www.3com.com/56k/need4_56k/linetest.html. IBM cannot assure the accuracy of this line test and a positive testing may not ensure a high-speed modem connection.
Q. Is the modem that came with my IBM 56K Modem Internet Kit compatible with V.90?
A. Yes, to locate the upgrade please go to www.pc.ibm.com/options.
Q. I uninstalled the combination soundcard/modem and its associated drivers and replaced it with the SoundBlaster AWE64 Value Kit. Now I no longer hear any sound when I try to play audio CDs.
A. There are several things that need to be checked. First, make sure that the volume on the speakers has been turned up. Next, make sure that the volume control has not been muted. You can find the volume control by double-clicking on the icon of the speaker within the system tray on the Windows 95 START Taskbar. Once youÆve confirmed that the volume control is not muted or that the slider volume controls have not been turned down, you are ready to proceed to the next step. Next, check to make sure that you have correctly installed the CD audio cable that came with your new soundcard. Refer to the userÆs manual for correct installation. Please note: You should use the cd audio cable that came with your new soundcard instead of re-using the CD audio cable that is already in your computer.
Q. I uninstalled the combination soundcard/modem and its associated drivers and replaced it with the SoundBlaster AWE64 Value Kit. Now I only hear sound coming from one of my speakers when playing audio cds.
A. This symptom will arise if you used the cd audio cable that was already in your computer and connected to your cdrom drive. Instead, use the cd audio cable that came with your new soundcard and try playing an audio cd again afterwards. The symptom should disappear.
Q. I canÆt play any MPEG files after uninstalling the combination soundcard/modem from my
computer.
A. Please refer to the manual named "Uninstalling the Combination Soundcard/Modem" that came with either your SoundBlaster AWE64 Value Kit or the IBM 56K Modem Internet Kit. There is a section that has been written to help you correct this problem. It is strongly recommended that you read the procedures outlined in this manual. It may answer many of your questions.
Q. Are there instructions available that I can download to help me uninstall the combination soundcard/modem and its associated drivers from my computer?
A. Yes, there are instructions available that you can download. Click here -
