Aptiva - Creating custom wallpaper in Windows

Applicable to: United States

To add a creative touch to Windows you can create custom wallpaper. For example, you can paste images into Paintbrush from applications such as Microsoft PowerPoint. You can also import scanned photographs, logos, artwork, or create your own designs in Paintbrush. You can also customize any of the Windows wallpaper files.

Here are the steps:

1. Open Paintbrush.

2. From the Options menu choose Image Attributes and then type the size you want the image to be.

3. Choose OK.

4. From the File menu choose Open and then select the filename you want. Images you import into Paintbrush should be in .PCX, .BMP, or .WMF format.

5. Choose OK.

6. Modify the image. For example, you might type your name or a message, change or add color, or size the image.

7. From the File menu choose Save As.

8. In the Filename box type a filename and add a .BMP extension. To retain your original file unchanged, type a filename different from the original. If you want to save your drawing in a format other than the default Windows bitmap format, choose Options and select the options you want. Save the file in your Windows directory. If C:\WINDOWS is not the current directory, select Windows from the Directories list.

9. Choose OK to save the file.

10. From the File menu choose Exit.

11. In the Main Group window open Control Panel.

12. Open Desktop.

13. In the Wallpaper File box select the filename of your new wallpaper design.

14. If you want your design centered on the screen, select Center. If you want to tile several smaller images, select Tile.

15. Choose OK.

16. Close Control Panel.

You can open two Paintbrush windows, use one as a sketch pad for the final design, and use the other for a file from which you cut or modify images. To work in two paintbrush windows open Paintbrush and size the window to half the screen size; then open Paintbrush again and size the second window beside the first.

Note: Using wallpaper requires additional memory but selecting a color or pattern in the Color dialog box from Control Panel does not.
