How can I turn my machine off but still have it answer the phone?

1) Enable Rapid Resume
2) Enable Wakeup On Ring
3) Start FaxWorks
4) Turn the machine off with the power switch on the front of the system unit. (Don't exit Windows or FaxWorks!)

What happens when the machine answers the phone now?

1) You hear the phone ring, as does the Aptiva
2) Aptiva turns itself on and starts resuming (Phone still ringing)
3) Rapid Resume is done and FaxWorks senses the phone is ringing.

Some software packages set the modem's ring count, and other software packages count the 'RING' message from the modem themselves. FaxWorks counts the 'RING' messages. So, if you have FaxWorks set up to answer after 3 rings, you will then have 3 rings after the resume before FaxWorks picks up the phone. (i.e., total # rings = # rings to complete resume +
# rings set up in software)

What if I want to answer the phone before FaxWorks is ready?

You may answer the phone at any time while it is ringing. FaxWorks will not pick up the phone after it has stopped ringing.

How do I know if an incoming call is voice or fax?

You cannot tell the difference.

There are some devices which use 'distinctive ring' (a telephone company service) to differentiate between Fax/Voice messages. They will ring the appropriate device (fax machine/voice phone). However, they do this by answering the phone (someone calling long distance gets charged) and they limit where you can place devices in your home. If you want full flexibility, a separate line is required.

I am having problems receiving a fax. What can I do?

There are a few changes that you can make to the FAXWORKS.INI file located in the C:\WINDOWS directory.

1) Open the file in the NOTEPAD and make the following changes:

[modem]
Fax Modem Type=Class1
Initialization String=AT&K4
Min Scan Line Time=1
Hardware Flow Control=0
Software Flow Control=1

2) Save the file and restart Faxworks. DO NOT re-run Modem Diagnostics once you have made these changes.

I have my old phone answering machine connected, but it never takes a call. What can I do?

You will have to choose whether you want your answering machine to answer or the Aptiva. Whichever one is set to
the smaller number of rings is the one which will pick up the phone.

My Aptiva will never answer the phone. What can I do?

Be sure that you do not subscribe to a telephone answering service or have the service provided through your phone
company. If the answering service picks up in a smaller number of rings than the Aptiva, it will always take the calls.

I have upgraded my machine to Windows '95. What do I need to make FaxWorks run properly?

To run FaxWorks Voice under Windows 95 you need to download FWV95-1.EXE and FWV95-2.EXE.
