PS/1-Aptiva - Information on avoiding backing up the Windows swap files

Applicable to: United States

I have an IBM PS/1 or Aptiva with Windows 3.1. When I am using the Backup program, it is backing up two large hidden files. Their names are as follows: 386SPART.PAR and SPART.PAR or WIN386.SWP. Can I delete these files or is there a way to prevent the PS/1 Fitness Backup program from backing them up?

When Windows is running in 386 Enhanced mode, Windows creates "swap files." These files store information from memory, that Windows may need later, in a centralized location on the harddrive. When Windows needs this information, it is loaded back into memory. The larger the swap file, the more information Windows can store. These files can increase the overall performance of Windows. There are two types of swap files; temporary and permanent. The temporary swap file is named WIN386.SWP and can be safely deleted at the C:\> prompt after exiting Windows. The permanent swap file and its pointer are named 386SPART.PAR and SPART.PAR. If permanent swap files are deleted, you can lose critical information that Windows needs to run properly. However, both types of swap files can get extremely large. Their size depends upon your hard drive and the settings you have selected. During the backup process, you may have to use several disks just for these files. The easiest way to prevent the PS/1 Backup procedure from including these files is to disable the swap file feature ( in the Virtual Memory utility ) and delete the swap file before beginning the backup procedure. After the backup procedure is completed, you can recreate the swap file. Follow the steps shown below to remove the swap file:

1. Click on the Control Panel icon located in the Main program group.
2. Click on the 386 Enhanced icon.
3. Click on the Virtual Memory option
4. Click on Change.
5. A window will appear with the current type and size. In the New Settings window, click on the downward arrow to the right of the your current swap file type.
6. A window will drop down with other option types. Click on None and click on OK to save the swap file type as None.
7. Click on Yes to confirm that you want to make the changes.
8. Click on Restart Windows for the changes to take place.
9. After you have exited Windows, you can restart Windows and perform the backup procedure.
10. Follow the same steps to create the swap file once the backup is complete. You can accept the default settings for the recommended size, or you may enter a smaller size if you wish.

The removal of the swap file will have no effect on your system during the backup procedure and no data will be lost. You may want to verify that the swap file has been disabled. If it is still on your hard drive, you can remove any file attributes (i.e. read only, hidden, or system) and then delete it.
