Space Saver Keyboard - Product Overview

General Information
As a response to our customers who want a keyboard solution optimized for use in a Netfinity rack-based server system, IBM offers the IBM Space Saver Keyboard and the IBM Netfinity Rack Keyboard Tray. The Space Saver Keyboard incorporates IBM's TrackPoint technology into a compact, quiet keyboard. Two buttons positioned below the space bar operate like mouse buttons, eliminating the need for a separate pointing device. By being less than 14 inches wide and featuring an 84-key layout this keyboard is designed to fit into areas with limited space. This keyboard is ideal for customers of rack mounted servers since it fits in the rack's keyboard tray. Included with this keyboard are two spare, heavy texture, red Trackpoint caps that can be used to replace caps on all ThinkPad notebook computers and TrackPoint keyboards. The IBM Netfinity Rack Keyboard Tray is a 19-inch, rack-mountable, sliding tray designed to hold the Space Saver Keyboard in a ready-to-use position in a Netfinity rackbased server system.

The Space Saver Keyboard features rubber dome/membrane technology key action, with an integrated TrackPoint 2 pointing stick. The keyboard incorporates a multi-key buffer with overrun detection, multiple scan code sets, and a bidirectional serial protocol.

The Netfinity Rack Keyboard Tray is a sliding tray for a keyboard and a pointing device (mouse or TrackPoint). It can support up to 24 lb (11kg). The tray can hold two general sizes of keyboards: small and large. A small keyboard (such as the IBM Space Saver Keyboard) is supported in a ready-to-use position. Small keyboards may be a maximum of 14.25 in (36.2 cm) wide and 6.25 in (15.9 cm) deep. Larger standard keyboards that are accommodated may be up to 19.7 in (50 cm) wide and 6.25 in (15.9 cm) deep.

Large keyboards are stored in the tray when not in use. When needed, the large keyboard must be lifted from inside the tray and laid across the tray for use. This allows many existing server keyboards to be used. Filler block are provided to enhance the fit of the keyboard in the tray. An 8-ft (2.4-m) extension cable set is included to connect the keyboard and pointing device to the rack console server selector switch or to the server.

Keyboards that are up to 1.5 in (3.8 cm) high can be used with the new Rack Keyboard Tray in just 1U of rack space (1U equals 1.75 inches). Larger keyboards will require 2U of rack space.
