TP 380Z - Event Viewer error message in Windows NT after initializing BIOS

Applicable to: EMEA

Symptom:
After initializing the BIOS and restarting the computer, Windows NT generates the following error message:A service or driver hasn't been able to start. Look in the event viewer. When browsing the Event Viewer, 4 red marks and 2 blue marks are displayed.

Configuration:
ThinkPad 380Z model 2635-JB0 with the French Windows NT preload installed.

Solution:
If infrared support is to be enabled

  1. Create the infrared driver diskette from Diskette Factory (or download the driver from the web and extract it to the hard drive).
  2. Run the INSTALL.EXE program and choose to INSTALL the infrared driver. This reinstalls the IR driver, as well as installs a new copy of serial.sys which is the file needed to correct this symptom.
  3. Restart the system.
  4. To prevent the serial.sys from the infrared driver diskette from being lost when Service Pack 3 is reapplied, copy the \winnt\system32\drivers\serial.sys file to \sp3\i386. If this is not done the problem will reoccur.

If infrared support is to be disabled

  1. Create the infrared driver diskette from Diskette Factory (or download the driver from the web and extract it to the hard drive).
  2. Run the INSTALL.EXE from this diskette and choose to uninstall the infrared support.
  3. Restart the system.
