TP 380Z - Event Viewer error message in Windows NT after initializing BIOS
Applicable to: EMEA
Symptom:
After initializing the BIOS and restarting the computer, Windows NT generates the following error message:A service or driver hasn't been able to start. Look in the event viewer. When browsing the Event Viewer, 4 red marks and 2 blue marks are displayed.
- 1 Red > The hardware resources for the COM are already used for another device.
- 2 Red > A conflict was detected between two drivers which refer to 2 areas of E/S. The driver irda_phy has been revoked for device <.Translated>, a range of E/S in the starting address is found a data 0x28 and 0x2c, and the end is found at 0x30.
- 3 Red > A conflict was detected between 2 drivers in two areas of the E/S port. The 'serial' driver was revoked for device <\Device\InfraredPort. Translated>, a range of the E/S port in the start address is found at 0x28 and 0x2c, and at the end 0x30.
- 1 Blue > Configuration data for Com1 replaces the pre-programmed data.
- 2 Blue > Event Viewer has started.
- 4 Red > The Com1 registers are conflicting with the control for COM.
Configuration:
ThinkPad 380Z model 2635-JB0 with the French Windows NT preload installed.
Solution:
If infrared support is to be enabled
- Create the infrared driver diskette from Diskette Factory (or download the driver from the web and extract it to the hard drive).
- Run the INSTALL.EXE program and choose to INSTALL the infrared driver. This reinstalls the IR driver, as well as installs a new copy of serial.sys which is the file needed to correct this symptom.
- Restart the system.
- To prevent the serial.sys from the infrared driver diskette from being lost when Service Pack 3 is reapplied, copy the \winnt\system32\drivers\serial.sys file to \sp3\i386. If this is not done the problem will reoccur.
If infrared support is to be disabled
- Create the infrared driver diskette from Diskette Factory (or download the driver from the web and extract it to the hard drive).
- Run the INSTALL.EXE from this diskette and choose to uninstall the infrared support.
- Restart the system.
