Use these instructions to install Windows 2000 on a hard drive. These instructions do not cover upgrading from another operating system or previous version of Windows NT.

1.0 What you will need
Follow the Network Operating System (NOS) instructions provided in this document sequentially unless you are instructed differently. Windows and messages might differ from those in this document. Throughout this document the term 'select' is used to mean, use the arrow keys to highlight a selection on a menu.

A supported hard drive. Refer to http://www.pc.ibm.com/compat for a list of supported options and part numbers for your server.

Check the BIOS version currently installed on your system. Install Netfinity 5500 M20 BIOS Flash Update Diskette version 1.00 or higher.

3.0 Known issues
There is a known issue with BIOS revision 16a, version 1.00. The Windows 2000 installation may hang during the beginning of the text mode / blue background portion of Setup. The work-around is to prevent Windows 2000 from trying to install ACPI HAL. If Windows 2000 tries to install ACPI HAL, it will hang. Press F5 during the text-mode setup install. You will be prompted to choose the HAL to be installed. Select MPS Multiprocessor PC HAL to successfully complete the installation.


4.0 Installation instructions

1. Boot system using the Windows 2000 Setup CD. If your BIOS revision level is 16a, version 1.00, continue with step #2, otherwise skip to step #4.
2. When blue background setup screen appears (not the "blue error screen"), press F5 for HAL load options.
3. Select MPS Multiprocessor PC. Press Enter to continue.
4. The Windows NT Server Setup Screen will display after a few moments. Follow the on-screen instructions, and files will be copied to the hard drive.
5. Remove any diskette in the floppy drive, and press Enter to restart the system.
6. When Windows NT Setup Screen comes up, press Enter twice to continue.
7. Page down to read the License Agreement, and press F8 to accept this agreement.
8. Choose the partition on which to install Windows NT. C: is suggested. Press Enter to continue.
9. Choose to convert to NTFS or FAT, and press Enter to continue.
10. Windows NT will examine your hard drive, copy files to the drive, and reboot. The system will then boot to the graphical portion of setup (Windows 2000 Setup Wizard), displaying the Welcome Screen, after NT is fully loaded.
11. Select Next to continue.
12. Windows NT installs and configures devices.
13. The Regional Settings screen will be displayed. Make changes only if you do not want US settings.
14. Select Next to continue.
15. Provide your Name and Organization on the Personalize Your Software screen. Select Next to continue.
16. Choose the appropriate options on the Licensing Mode screen. Select Next to continue.
17. Set the System Name and the Administrative Password on the Computer Name and Administrator Password screen. Select Next to continue.
18. Choose the components you would like installed on the Windows 2000 Components screen. Select Next to continue.
19. Set the Time, Date, and Time Zone on the Date and Time Settings screen. Select Next to continue.
20. Select Next to install Windows NT Networking on the Network Settings screen.
21. Choose Typical or Custom Settings. Select Next to continue.
22. Set up network components as needed by your network. Windows 2000 should detect your NIC Adapter(s) automatically. Select Next to continue.
23. Windows NT will install components and any additional support required on the Installing Components screen. Select Next to continue.
24. Windows NT will Install start menu items, Register components, Save settings, Remove any temporary files used on the Perform Final Tasks screen.
25. Select Finish to complete the Windows 2000 Setup Wizard.
26. The system will reboot and load Windows 2000.
27. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to logon.
28. When the desktop is displayed, you may see the Windows 2000 Configure Your Server wizard, which will further help you setup your server. This wizard will help configure many of the components you chose to install.

1. 5.0 Clustering To setup Cluster with IBM Netfinity Fiber Channel Adapter: Install Windows NT 4.0 onto the system.

Create RAID arrays with Symplicity Storage Manager.
Upgrade Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000 Server.
Create the cluster.
