Important:
During the installation of Microsoft Windows 2000 Beta, its components or its utilities, whenever a restart of the machine is requested, cold boot the machine instead (turn the power off, then power the machine on again). There is currently an issue with lack of video resulting from warm booting the machine. This issue is under investigation.

Before installation of Windows 2000 Beta:

  1. Upgrade the system BIOS to the latest available level
  2. Create a bootable diskette containing the appropriate DOS-based CD-ROM drivers for your system (using the DOS SMARTDRV utility will speed up the installation)
  3. Boot the system with this diskette

Note: The system may also be booted from the Windows 2000 Beta 3 CD instead of using a diskette.

Installation of Windows 2000 Beta:

  1. Create and format a 2GB FAT16 partition on your hard file.
  2. Run WINNT.EXE from the i386 subdirectory on the Windows 2000 Beta 3 CD. Files will be copied onto your hard file.
  3. Press Enter to restart the machine. Remember to power off and restart instead!
  4. Confirm the Beta Version Installation when prompted.
  5. Press Enter to continue the setup process.
  6. Press F8 to accept the End User License Agreement (EULA).
  7. The Windows NT fdisk screen will appear. Make sure that C:FAT is highlighted. Press Enter to continue the Setup process.
  8. Select the file system to be installed. It is recommended that FAT be used, since the system can be converted to another at a later time.
  9. Setup will examine the disks (ScanDisk) and start the file copy process to the appropriate Windows 2000 subdirectories.
  10. Setup will now reboot the machine. Eject the diskette first. Remember to power off and power on instead!
  11. Click Next to continue the Setup process.
  12. The Installing Devices screen will appear. Make the appropriate selections for your system, clicking Next to move on to the next selection.
  13. The Windows Networking components will be installed.
  14. Setup will install more components and complete its final set of tasks, saving settings, etc.
  15. Click Finish when the Completing Windows 2000 Setup wizard appears.
  16. The system will shut down and reboot. Remember to power off and on instead!
  17. Close the Getting Started with Windows 2000 dialog box after rebooting.
