Aptiva - 2164 Hitachi 6X DVD regionalization issue

Applicable to: World-Wide

A situation was recently discovered where the Hitachi 6X DVD drives installed in the 2164 machine type Aptivas had a different firmware version than the drive originally tested and used to create the preload. As a result, the DVD playback software included with the Aptiva could not correctly identify the region setting for the drive and would therefore fallback to it's default setting, which is region 1 (North America). This would disable DVD playback for all regions except region 1.

A patch diskette was developed and supplied to manufacturing, who reworked all machines prior to ship. The patch eliminates the chance of a failure on first use. The same patch, in diskette form, as well as a flyer explaining it's use during a reload, was also included in the box. (A copy of the flyer text is below.) Should one of these machines need to be reloaded, the patch diskette must be used according to the directions included, (during the reload, prior to first boot), or the recovery procedure must be restarted.

The number of machines this diskette has been added to is limited. Work is under way to re-spin the preload for each of the geographies affected, to be available as soon as possible. Service and Support has made the requirement that the number of machines shipped with the diskette and flyer be kept to the absolute minimum, ~1,400 units.

As we anticipate the new Recovery CDs will be available prior to a customer needing a replacement for a defective or missing diskette, (most of the respins will be in manufacturing by 4/15/99), the patch file will not be made readily available. However, should for customer SAT reasons one be needed, please contact Level 2 in RTP for a copy of the file. Level 2 RTP will not send the file to customers. The two lists below show the new Recovery CD part numbers that include the DVD fix. The new CD will be cut in on the manufacturing line as soon as it is available.

Important information about recovering factory installed programs and files

Your IBM® Aptiva® Personal Computer comes with a Product Recovery and Diagnostics CD and a Recovery Update Diskette, which you can use to restore the computer to its original software configuration. The Recovery Update Diskette contains some files that are not on the Product Recovery and Diagnostics CD, but are needed to set up your Aptiva Personal Computer during a recovery process. This document provides instructions on how to use the Recovery Update Diskette with the Product Recovery and Diagnostics CD to complete a system recovery process. Store these instructions along with the Product Recovery and Diagnostics CD and Recovery Update Diskette in a safe place for future use.

Recovery procedure:
1. Make sure that your computer and monitor are turned on.
2. Insert the Product Recovery and Diagnostics CD into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
3. Make sure you do not have a diskette in the diskette drive.
4. Shut down Windows®, and then turn off your computer.
5. Wait ten seconds; then push the On/Off button to restart the computer.
6. When the CD menu appears, select Full Recovery.
7. Follow the instructions on the screen until the recovery procedure instructs you to reboot your computer. DO NOT REBOOT the computer at this point. (If you reboot the computer before completing steps 8 and 9, you will have to perform this procedure again starting at step 1.)
8. Remove the Product Recovery and Diagnostic CD from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
9. Insert the Recovery Update Diskette into the diskette drive.
10. Turn off the computer.
11. Wait ten seconds; then push the On/Off button again to restart the computer.
12. Wait until the OK message appears. The OK message indicates that the Recovery Update Diskette has completed installing the files.
13. Remove the Recovery Update Diskette from the computer.
14. Turn off the computer.
15. Wait ten seconds; then push the On/Off button again to restart the computer.

You have now completed this portion of the recovery procedure. Your computer will continue to configure itself and will prompt you for additional information as needed. When the recovery procedure is complete, use the Audio Driver Update CD provided with your computer to update the audio drivers.
