TP 770X/Z - External monitor appears twice in Device Manager when attached to a SelectaDock III

Applicable to: World-Wide

Symptom:
A plug-and-play external monitor shows up twice in Device Manager under Monitors on 770X and 770Z systems when the monitor is attached to the docking station on the first cold boot on the SelectaDock III.

Configuration:
A ThinkPad 770X or 770Z running Windows 98 with the dual display capabilities enabled

Solution:
To correctly configure an external monitor attached to the SelectaDock III, follow the procedures outlined below.

  1. Dock the ThinkPad into the SelectaDock III. DO NOT have the external monitor attached at this point!
  2. Power on the ThinkPad and allow Windows 98 to create a "clean" docked configuration.
  3. After it has properly configured the ThinkPad in the SelectaDock III there will be two Unknown Monitors listed in Device manager.
  4. You will need to update the driver for the first Unknown Monitor so that it is listed as Laptop Display panel, and leave the Unknown Monitor listed as the second monitor in Device Manager.
  5. Shutdown Windows 98 and power off the ThinkPad.
  6. Attach the plug and play external monitor to the SelectaDock III and power on the ThinkPad.
  7. Windows 98 should properly configure your plug and play monitor as the second monitor in Device Manager.

Note: With the dual display support enabled, the ThinkPad LCD will be set as Monitor 1 and the external monitor will be recognized as Monitor 2.
