Network Station - Installation of Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server Edition on IBM NetFinity 3500

Here are the steps for installing Windows NT TSE onto a NF3500 or a similar computer (any machine that uses the Adapter AIC7895 SCSI adapter ).

• Format three 1.44 MB diskettes and label them as 'TSE Boot', 'TSE #2' and 'TSE #3' or similar.
• Obtain the 67,280 byte version of AIC78XX.SYS from NT 4 Server ( found on Diskette 3 or \WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS from a working server ) or download it from :

and copy it onto Diskette 3.

• From the \I386 directory on the TSE CD-ROM, run the command WINNT.EXE /OX to create the diskette images.

• Boot the NF3500 using the diskettes (in most cases, the CD-ROM must NOT be in the drive or the NF will try to boot from it).

• Once Diskette 3 is loaded, the installation program should recognize both the IDE CD-ROM and the SCSI hard disk(s).

• The user will be prompted at one point to reboot the PC. This should boot from the hard disk and start the installation properly. This will fail with a BSOD due to 'Inaccessible media' or something similar, because the installation has copied the faulty AIC78XX.SYS ( 26,704 bytes ) from the TSE CD-ROM. To resolve, boot to DOS and copy the 67,280 byte version of the file into \WTSRV\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS on the drive which NT is installed. A reboot of the server should then start the TSE installation.

• An alternative to this is to copy the entire \I386 subtree from the CD-ROM to a DOS formatted hard disk and update the AIC78XX.SYS driver before installing using the WINNT.EXE /B. However, this process takes longer than the floppy-based installation.

Note: When the user installs Service Pack 4 for Terminal Server Edition, the user will be asked if the AIC78XX.SYS should be replaced. Do NOT replace the AIC78XX.SYS. This also holds true for Windows NT 4 as well. If in doubt, do not allow Service Packs to replace non-MS drivers. In the worst case, it will mean that the entire server becomes inaccessible.
