Before upgrading Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 to Microsoft Windows 2000 Beta:

  1. Make sure the system is using the latest level of flash BIOS.
  2. Restore the original Windows NT 4.0 preload (this is optional, but recommended).
  3. Make sure that Service Pack 3 or Service Pack 4 has been installed (required).
  4. Uninstall the Norton AntiVirus software using Add/Remove Programs.


Upgrading to Windows 2000 Beta:

  1. Insert the Windows 2000 CD and click Yes when prompted to upgrade the system.
  2. Click Upgrade to Windows 2000 and Next to continue.
  3. Click Accept to agree to the End User License Agreement (EULA).
  4. Click No, do not upgrade the drive to NTFS file system. Click Next to continue.
  5. Windows 2000 Setup will load and a warning to disable service will appear.
  6. When prompted, in Control Panel - SCSI Adapters, add the generic IDE CD-ROM controller and remove the PIIX IDE controller. Do not reboot.
  7. Under Control Panel - Devices, highlight PIIX IDE, click Startup, click Disable, then click OK and close Devices.
  8. Click Next. The machine will reboot and begin copying files.
  9. After copying files, the machine will again reboot and continue the Windows 2000 Setup process.
  10. Setup will examine the hard disks (ScanDisk) and copy more files.
  11. The Windows 2000 Setup Wizard will appear and continue the setup process.
  12. The Installing Devices screen will appear with a scrolling indicator bar.
  13. The file copy process will continue for several minutes.
  14. Setup will complete its final set of tasks, Start menu items, Registry components, etc., and delete temporary files.
  15. Setup will finish and the system will reboot.
  16. When prompted, log into Windows 2000.
  17. Modem Audio Device Detection occurs.
  18. Wait until the Desktop stabilizes.
  19. Close the Getting Started window, Close all open windows and shut down the machine.
  20. Cold boot (turn the power off and then power on again) the system.
