TP 770/ED - Black box covers video window when playing an AVI file

Symptom:
After an AVI file finishes playing in a Macromedia Director presentation, a black box covers the video window for 2 seconds and then the AVI video reappears.

Configuration:
ThinkPad 770/E/ED running Windows 95/98.

Solution:

  1. Edit the SYSTEM.INI file and comment out (;) the following line in the [driver32] section: vids.draw=dvideo.dll
  2. Rename DVIDEO.DLL in the Windows\System directory to some other name (i.e. DVIDEO.BAK).

Additional information:
When dvideo.dll is disabled, hardware overlay will not be available to MCI client programs such as the old Media Player, however, the hardware overlay function is provided for DirectX client programs.
