Supported ThinkPad Models
The following ThinkPad notebook models are designated as Windows 2000 Beta 3 supported models. Additional notebook models will be added as IBM completes the verification tests for Beta 3 support.
These legacy/Advanced Power Management (APM) ThinkPad models can run Windows 2000 Beta 3:
These non-Legacy/Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) ThinkPad models can run Windows 2000 Beta 3:
Note: Currently, IBM is also testing ACPI function for Windows 2000 Beta 3 on ThinkPad 390 and 390E.
Legacy/APM ThinkPad models
Windows 2000 Beta 3 supports legacy notebook hardware with features such as APM functionality support(e.g. suspend/resume/hibernation), and Plug and Play PC Card support. However, this does not include Plug and Play support with the use of docking stations or port replicators. Docking station and port replicator usage under Windows 2000 Beta 3 will inherit the same limitations as under Windows NT 4.0, such as supporting only cold docking and undocking.
Important Note: Due to recent design changes in Windows 2000 Beta 3, suspend/resume and hibernation will not function on the following ThinkPad models:
Microsoft plans to release a special fix to support power management functionality on these ThinkPad notebooks. IBM expects to release the fix on the ThinkPad support web site as well.
Non-Legacy/ACPI ThinkPad models
An ACPI ThinkPad system can fully exploit the advantages of Windows 2000 Beta 3. For example under the ACPI, OnNow power management and full Plug and Play functionality are supported.
Various power saving modes include CPU power. Plug and play capability includes dynamic docking/undocking, ThinkPad UltraBay IDE device hot swapping, and dynamic device detection and configuration for the display/monitor devices.
Important Note: The System BIOS on your ThinkPad system MUST be updated BEFORE the Windows 2000 Beta 3 is installed. This is required in order for ACPI to run with Windows 2000 Beta 3 on your ThinkPad notebook.
System BIOS Update
Before you install Windows 2000 Beta 3, you must update the system BIOS on your ThinkPad notebook. To take full advantage of all the features offered by Windows 2000 Beta 3, it is strongly recommended that you update your ThinkPad's system BIOS before upgrading or installing Windows 2000 Beta 3. If you do not update the system BIOS, especially for ACPI ThinkPad models, you will encounter SETUP problems such as hanging during SETUP or aborting during installation.

How to Update the System BIOS
The following are the required steps to get the System BIOS updated for your ThinkPad. The flash BIOS update disk file can be obtain from IBM ThinkPad support web site: http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/support/thinkpad/tpopsys.html
Building the System Program Service(BIOS) Diskette
Instructions to building a System Program Service Diskette:
Using the System Program Service(BIOS) Diskette
After creating the System Program Service Diskette follow the instructions listed below:
Note: You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the system program. Also, if your computer is attached to a port replicator, docking station, or PC Card Enabler, turn off your computer and detach it before proceeding.
Warning: Do not turn off or suspend your computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND YOUR COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.
After the BIOS update, perform the following steps to make the changes effective:
Installing Windows 2000 Professional Beta 3
Fresh Install Windows 2000 Professional Beta 3
IBM recommends to its end users to install Windows 2000 as a fresh (new) installation for testing and evaluation purposes.. If your ThinkPad has an internal CD/DVD-ROM drive, simply boot from the Windows 2000 Beta 3 CD and follow the instructions provide by the SETUP menu.
You can also install Windows 2000 Beta 3 using an unattended mode installation. For more information on unattended installs, please refer to the Setup information included on Windows 2000 Beta 3 CD -- READ1ST.TXT, SETUP1.TXT, and SETUP2.TXT.
If your ThinkPad system does not support a bootable CD-ROM, you'll have to use a boot diskette to get things started. You can create the Setup boot disks from the BOOT disk image files included on the Windows 2000 Beta 3 CD. To create these disks, you will need four blank, formatted, high-density diskettes. To create the Setup Boot diskettes, follow the instructions provide below:
Upgrade Install for Windows 2000 Professional Beta 3
Windows 2000 Beta 3 supports upgrade installations from Windows 95/98, Windows NT 3.51, and Windows NT 4.0 Workstation. However, most of the Windows 95/98 and/or Windows NT 4.0 applications designed specifically to function on ThinkPad hardware will not function properly after you migrated/upgrade to Windows 2000 Beta 3. The following is a partial list of such applications:
Because these preloaded applications are not supported by Windows 2000 Beta 3, IBM strongly recommends that all ThinkPad end users to uninstall these applications before upgrading to Windows 2000 Professional.
If you are upgrading from Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 Beta 3 SETUP will automatically detect all unsupported Windows NT 4.0 device drivers, such as IBM TrackPoint, IBM Serial InfraRed(IR), MPEG-2/Video Capture, and so forth. In this case, during the initial portion of the Windows 2000 Beta 3 upgrade, the SETUP program will notify you with a list of devices that are marked as unsupported devices under Windows 2000 Beta 3. Before proceeding further with the upgrade, please follow the instructions provide as to how to remove/uninstall these device drivers. If you choose not to uninstall these device drivers, they will be disabled automatically by the Widows 2000 Beta 3 SETUP program during the upgrade.
In addition, during the upgrade from Windows NT 4.0 upgrade to Windows 2000 Beta 3, SETUP will automatically uninstall SystemSoft CardWizard and IBM Power Management System. After uninstalling SystemSoft CardWizard, Windows 2000 Beta 3 will ask you to restart Windows 2000 Beta 3. You can click on Cancel and proceed with the installation.
Setting LCD Resolution and installing APM on legacy ThinkPad models
After installing Windows 2000 Beta 3 on your legacy/APM ThinkPad notebook, the LCD's display resolution and color depth are not set to its optimized settings. Windows 2000 Beta 3 Hints and Tips
There are some known limitations when running Windows 2000 Beta 3 on IBM ThinkPad notebooks. Some suggested workarounds are described in this section:
Multimedia Known Limitations
SETUP /Installation Limitations
When installing or upgrading to Windows 2000 Beta 3 from CD-ROM, some ThinkPad models may not be able to complete the SETUP program. During TEXT MODE setup, the CD-ROM drive is not detected correctly and therefore, Windows 2000 Beta 3 setup program will not be able to copy files from the CD-ROM. This is caused by old firmware in the CD-ROM drive. To correct this problem, the firmware on the CD-ROM, listed below, needs to be update:
Model: LG CRN-8241B, Rev 100 Jan'99
FRU P/N : 05K8994, ASM P/N: 05K8992
Contact IBM Service Center (1-800-772-2227) or your local IBM Service Center for more information on obtaining the firmware update.

Legacy/APM ThinkPad Notebooks
All Non-legacy/ACPI ThinkPad Notebooks
IBM recommends hot docking/undocking for non-legacy/ACPI ThinkPad models rather than warm docking/undocking. Under Windows 2000 Beta 3, warm docking can sometimes be unstable.
ThinkPad 770E/770ED/770X/600/600E
ThinkPad models 770E/ED/X/Z and 600/E have the ability for an IDE device to be dynamically swapped without turning off the computer. This is similar to PC Card ejection and insertion. You can eject a device either through the OS or hardware. Devices that are supported are floppy drive, CD/DVD-ROM drive, ZIP drive, LS-120 drive, and the secondary battery. However, dynamic swapping of an IDE hard disk drive is not supported for Windows 2000 Beta 3 release
