Aptiva - 2144-P30/2R0 Recovery instructions

Service Information:
Creating Recovery Diskettes:
1. Go to an OS/2 or DOS Command Prompt (by opening the OS/2 System folder, open Command Prompts, and then double click on either an OS/2 Window, OS/2 Full Screen, DOS Window, DOS Full Screen)

2. At the C:\ prompt, switch to the CD-ROM drive by typing
E: and press [Enter] (if in DOS or Windows)
D: and press [Enter] (if in OS/2 Warp)

3. Make sure you have the Aptiva Multimedia Exploration CD in the CD-ROM drive.

4. Change directories to the Recovery directory by typing CD RECOVERY [Enter]

5. To make the first disk, type the following at the command prompt:
LOADDSKF RECOVER1.IMG A: /F /Q /Y [Enter]

6. When the diskette is finished, remove it from the drive and label it OS/2 Recovery Diskette 1.

7. Build the other two diskettes as in steps 5 and 6 by typing:
LOADDSKF RECOVER2.IMG A: /F /Q /Y [Enter]
LOADDSKF RECOVER3.IMG A: /F /Q /Y [Enter]
And label them OS/2 Recovery Diskette 2 and 3..

8. Build the DOS recovery diskette by inserting a fourth blank disk and type:
LOADDSKF DOSRECOV.IMG A: /F /Q /Y [Enter]

9. Label this disk DOS RECOVERY DISKETTE.

Note:
You can also make the OS/2 Recovery diskettes by following the prompts from the Recover Diskettes icon in the Custom Tools folder in OS/2.

FDISK:
FDISK will destroy all of the data on the C drive!
Boot with the DOS recovery diskette
Choose the option 3 off of the menu that appears: Go to a DOS prompt.
At the A:\> prompt, have type FDISK /MBR [Enter]
At the DOS prompt, type FDISK [ENTER].
Choose Option 4 [ENTER], Display partition information.
There should be only one parition, PRI DOS.
Make note of the volume label. Press ESC to continue.
Choose Option 3. Delete primary partition or logical drive.
It will warn you that all data will be lost, does you want to continue? Choose Y for Yes.
To confirm, enter the volume label noted earlier.
Press ESC twice to continue.
Choose Option 1. Create primary DOS partition or logical DOS drive.
Choose Option 1 again. Create primary partition.
Hit the ESC key twice to exit FDISK. With the diskette in drive a:, press ctl-alt-del to reboot the system.
Format:
From the menu choose option 3, Go to a DOS prompt.
At the command prompt again, type FORMAT C: .
It will warn you that all data will be lost, Choose Y to continue with the format.
After the hard drive is formatted, Type exit.

Recovery:
Boot with the first OS/2 recovery diskette. Insert the second OS/2 recovery diskette when prompted.
At the blue menu screen again, choose option 1: Reload original IBM Aptiva Software.
At this point it will tell you to place the Multimedia Exploration CD in the CD ROM drive and press any key to continue.
The system will reload automatically.
