Aptiva - 2161, 2162 Technical Limitations

Applicable to: United States

1) First Boot Errors
Installing printer driver during first boot causes a general protection fault
Fee or Free?

Description: Installing the HP660c printer driver during first boot causes a general protection fault.

Steps to Recreate:
1. During first boot, install HP 660C printer driver.
2. Choose skip testing the printer connection.

The following error appears:
"Hpvsetup caused a general protection fault in module DDEML.DLL at 0002:00003277"

Workaround: Install the printer driver after first boot. This will also happen on HP 600 drivers.

If the printer was installed during first boot, delete the printer driver and reinstall using Add New Printers:

To install the drivers after first boot:
1. Double-click on My Computer.
2. Double-click on Printers.
3. Double-click on Add New Printers.
4. Follow the instructions on the screen.

"cannot load C:\windows\cwaudio.bin,...." rebooting
Fee or Free?

Description: Reboot to DOS mode, screen shows "cannot load C:\windows\cwaudio.bin, using default firmware download". Just rebooting the machine shows the same message.

Workaround: This is an informational message. The wording will be changed on next release (mid '97.)

2) AOL


Cannot uninstall AOL 2.5; not in Add/Remove or Aptiva Installer
Fee or Free? Free (Aptiva Specific Issue)

Description: AOL 2.5 not present in Add/Remove or Aptiva Installer after it is set up/installed; therefore, there is no way to uninstall it. AOL is part of Windows 95.

3) ATI Rage II


Changing color depth without rebooting hoses several applications

Description: When trying to invoke a color depth change, Windows 95 prompts that problems exist and require a reboot.

Below are related defects:
Get Windows protection error when changing color depth.
Lotus fails to adjust to color depth change.
Changing color depth without restarting causes RC blue buttons.
Application crashes after dynamic color depth change.
Scroll bars disappears in CompuServe.

Workaround: Reboot the system after changing the color depth.

G200 DDC Not Working Well When Monitor Off
Fee or Free?

Description: When booting up with the G200 monitor turned off, the drivers do not recognize the monitor; the "Adjustments" tab says "Unknown Monitor." On other monitors, a reboot will fix the problem. However, the only way to fix this on a G200 is to remove the Display adaper from the system Device Manager and reboot.

Workaround: Manually setup refresh rate in all resolutions. Also need to leave the monitor on and have it power down, (DPMS monitor).

Video refresh reset after Resume
Fee or Free?

Description: The video refresh rate will be reset without user intervention or approval on a suspend/resume. This will lead to a scrambled screen in some instances with a non-DDC monitor.

Use an 8515 monitor. (Possibly other non-DDC monitors as well.) Set the following: 640X480 resolution, 1152X864 virtual desktop, 16-bit color depth. The machine will ask for approval after the change is made.

Perform a suspend and resume. The refresh rate will be reset without user intervention/approval. The screen is scrambled.

Workaround: A warm boot and safe mode start must be performed to correct the problem. Change the resolution.

4) AudioStation


3D sound is cut off while recording

Description: 3D sound is cut off while recording. For example, record a CD track to a wav file, the 3D effect cuts off while recording then back on when stopped. If recording in stereo, the 3D effect is captured, though not heard, in the process.

Workaround: Record in stereo to hear the effects after the recording.

Windows 95 Volume Control does not stay on Taskbar

Description: After adding the Windows 95 volume control to the task bar and rebooting, the volume control disappears.

Steps to replicate problem:
1. Go to Control Panel.
2. Double-click on Multimedia.
3. Check "Show the volume control on the taskbar."
4. Click apply or ok.
5. Reboot. The volume control disappears.

Workaround: Use the AudioStation volume control.

Systems Affected: 2162; 2161

Mute state is not correct using Computer Remote Control

Description:
Execute AudioStation.
Toggle off CD Player.
Mute main volume with Mute button from Computer Remote Control.
Mute CD Player volume control with mouse.
Press Mute button on Remote a couple of times.
The Main Volume mute toggles on and off and does not affect the mute state of CD volume control.

With Audio Station open, Audio Mixer Open, CD Player Open, and no volume controls muted:
Press mute on Remote.
Main Volume control as well as CD Volume control gets muted.
As before with CD Player closed, pressing the Mute button on remote did not affect mute state of CD Player volume control.
Using mouse, put main volume control in normal state, not muted.
Pressing Mute button on remote will alternate the mute state between CD Player and Main Volume.

Workaround: Understand how the buttons work.

Midi player records by clicking the record button twice. Wav player records by clicking the record button once and the play button once.

Description: Click the record button twice on MIDI player.
RESULTS:
The midi player kicks off into record mode and starts recording. Clicking the record button twice on WAV player will not kick off the record mode of WAV player.

Workaround: Understand the differences.

AudioStation won't play wav while IC Phone connected nor vice versa
Fee or Free?
Description: AudioStation will not play a wav file while IC Phone is active.
To reproduce:
1. Dial up IBM Global Network connection.
2. Go to Aptivaware and start IC Phone.
3. After connection is made, wav files will not play "AudioView BOX - audio player busy" , although CDs and MIDIs will play with no error.

While IC phone is connected, Windows will not play wave files through the media player.
Workaround: There is no workaround. The wav device may only be used by one application at a time. Choose to use one or the other.

5) Battle Beast


Install allowed with insufficient HD space

Description: The install allows installation although insufficient HD space is available.

Workaround: Check the Hard Drive space available before installing.

6) Caesar II


Caesar II crashes when insufficient HD space available.

Description: Caesar II crashes during installation when insufficient hard drive space is available.

Workaround: Install the game on a partition with more space, or free space on the current partition and install it.

7) CompuServe


Compuserve will not disconnect with RingCentral running in the background
Fee or Free?

Description:
Steps to reproduce:
1. Start RingCentral.
2. Connect using CompuServe 3.0.
3. Exit CompuServe.
4. The dialup connection does not disconnect.

This situation seems to occur only when RingCentral is configured to use SpeechMail. The CompuServe 3 Connection remains open when another application is running that might also utilize the Internet connection.

Workaround: Close RingCentral.

8) Demo CD


If resolution is 800x600 or higher, the demo exit screens are not properly displayed.

Description: If resolution is 800x600 or higher, screens are not displayed correctly when entering and leaving Demo. The running demo itself seems fine.

Workaround: The demo is only to run in 640X480, 16-bit colors.

Not rebooting to Demo

Description: Not rebooting to Demo.

Workaround: Autostart the demo:
1. Reinstall the Demo

Demo not starting

Description: When you leave Demo and go to Windows and reboot machine or shutdown/power up, the Demo does not start; it stays on the desktop. Using either timeout option doesn't matter. (The timeout works correctly.)
The wstartup=0.

Workaround: The demo and the Guide use the same flag in bk.ini to run.
1. Edit c:\aptiva\data\bk.ini
2. Change wstartup=0 to wstartup=3
3. Save and exit the file. Next time the demo comes up, it will be correct.

If the Guide is uninstalled, create a new file called c:\aptiva\data\bk.ini and add the following:

Also, the Rapid Resume not getting turned back on is a known issue that will be fixed in the February refresh of the demo.

9) Aptiva Desktop Customization


Aptiva Desktop Customization icons do not scale with MS Plus! Settings

Description: If the icon size is changed, the animated icons don't resize.

Workaround: Turn off the icon animation to have the icon resize.

Systems Affected: 2134, 2176; Stealth

The help icon is different after reinstalling.

Description: Help icon changes from a book to a question mark after reinstalling

Workaround: None

Nothing happens on start desktop effects.

Description: If you click on start desktop effects when they have already been started, it appears that nothing happened.

Workaround: Check in the System Tray for the Desktop Customization Icon, (the icon will have red, yellow, and blue on it). If the icon appears, click on the icon to pull up Desktop Customization. It is already started if the icon is in the System Tray.

Reinstalling Aptiva Desktop Customization get read only errors.

Description: The installer launches from the diagnostics CD, but the following error occurs: "A read only file c:\program files\ibm\aptdesk\mvsijdll.dll was found while attempting to copy files to the destination location. To overwrite, click yes. Otherwise, click no. If you click yes, you then get the following error, "Severe: general file transfer error: please check your location and try again. Error#:-4 Related file: c:\program files\ibm\aptdesk\mvsijdll.dll". Can only click ok. Program then terminates. If you click no to the first message (don't replace read only file), the same message comes up for the following files:
mvsloadr.exe
mvshldll.dll
mvdzldll.dll
mvdzlexe.exe

Workaround: When reinstalling, click "No" on all files.

10) Home Director


System loses sound with Home Director

Description: The system loses system sounds only while Home Director is running.

Workaround: None

11) IBM Global Network, Internet Registration 2.0


IBM Global Network screen will not close.
Fee or Free? Free

Description: Open dialer, but cancel through setup, so no connection established. After clicking on phone, an error appears, "Please enter valid account". Hit OK, and program does not minimize, move, or close.

Steps to recreate problem:
1. Double click on Online Services.
2. Double click on IBM Internet Connection.
3. Go through setup, but cancel before entering an account code.
4. Double click on the phone icon on the IBM Global Network Dialer (Network View) Screen.
5. An error message will pop up, invalid account code.
6. Click on Ok. The IBM Global Network (Network View) screen will not disappear.

Workaround: Press ctrl-alt-del once to display the task list, then select IGN Dialer and click the "End task" button.

12) IBM Online Housecall


IBM AntiVirus hangs on Host computer with Co-session.
Fee or Free?

Description: Running the IBM Antivirus on Host computer while doing co-session, hangs the host as well as remote viewer.

Workaround: You cannot use Antivirus during Co-Session.

Systems Affected: 2159-S80, S90; 2162; 2161

Error Message: "Display Drivers are not Windows95 Compatible"
Fee or Free?

Description: When running Co-session, it adds an entry to the system.ini which causes an error in Mechwarrior2. The error is as follows:
Display Drivers are not Windows95 Compatible.

Workaround: Reboot the machine before playing MechWarrior.

Cswh.ini has Default modem=IBM Mwave VOD Host.
Fee or Free?

Description: Cswh.ini has Default modem=IBM Mwave VOD Host.
This entry does not affect the operation of Co-Session and will not be changed at this time. Any new version will include the phone book entry for the AT&T Win Modem and any changes will be to that entry.

Workaround: FYI Only.

Co-Session does not support 32 bit color depth.
Fee or Free?

Description: Co-Session does not support 32-bit color depth.

Workaround: Change the resolution to 640x480x256 before using Online Housecall.

13) IBM Registration


Cannot preview Screen Savers
Fee or Free?

Description: If using the snowboard screen saver (free gift from registration), not able to preview (full screen) any other screensaver.
To reproduce:
1. After registration, go to the screen savers and preview snowboard.
2. Now try to preview any other other screensaver.

Workaround: Change the screen saver to another screen saver before previewing.

14) IC Phone


"Failure to initialize message" while using IC Phone.
Fee or Free?
Description: IBM IC Phone will not initialize and/or launch while a Video CD is playing. If the Video CD is stopped momentarily, it will then allow you to launch, but if it is playing, you get a "failed to initialize IC phone" message. After you are connected to phone server, you can resume play with the Video CD. But when you connect to another IC phone, you lose the audio from the Video CD.

To Reproduce:
1. Open Active Movie, insert a Video CD, and Start Mpeg
2. Callup and connect to IBM Global Network.
3. Go to AptivaWare and open IBM IC Phone.
4. Immediately you get a "failure to initialize" message.
5. Cancel IC Phone and stop action on the Video CD.
6. Open IBM IC Phone connection again; it will now initialize and return to normal service.
7. Start Video CD up, it will play, pull down the user list and call someone.
8. When you connect to another party, the audio from Video CD kicks off.

Workaround: Stop playing the video and after getting the connection you can continue playing it. Only one program may use wav sound on the sound card at one time. Both of these applications use wav sound. You must choose one or the other.

15) Juno E-Mail Service


Juno does not appear on task bar, creates problems.
Fee or Free?

Description: Launch Juno. Notice that it does not appear on the task bar. Continue with the registration/setup of the application. When you get to the modem setup, select the automatic configuration. While it is going through its five steps, click on the larger Juno window and cancel the installation to exit.

The Juno modem setup will continue in the background, even after the main installation program is no longer running. It eventually gives an error when it thinks it is returning to the program. If you happen to have this modem setup hidden behind a larger, focused application, you seem to get an error from nowhere.
The error reads: Program Error Closing the current program.
If the problem persists, contact the vendor of this program.

Workaround: Close the error.

16) Kai's Power Goo


Trap when running .AVI file created by Goo
Fee or Free? Free

Description: Trap when running .AVI file created by Goo
Viewing the .AVI file created in Full Frame format from the desktop creates a "Rundll32 - Illegal operation error and caused a invalid page fault in Kernal32.dll @ 0157:bff85d56. When shutting down, an error appeared saying "Win95 RPC WMSG Window not responding." After that, you cannot do a shutdown or restart the machine.
Steps to recreate:
1. Create a Goo.
2. Save the goo as an AVI file.
3. Select the file type of Full Frame (Uncompressed).
4. Exit Power Goo.
5. Double click on the .AVI file created above to run it.
The player will come up but then you will get an error (see above).

Workaround: Save the file in compressed AVI format.

17) Kid's Room


No mouse durring the introduction to Kid's Room.

Description: Don't see the mouse until the end of the introduction.

Workaround: Hit the space bar and exit the intro early.

Strategy Games of the World gives disk space error in launch.

Description: Steps to recreate:
1. Install Strategy Games.
2. Add the game to the Kids Room program list.
3. Bring up Kid's Room.
4. Launch Strategy Games from Kids Room.
5. Receive the following message:
'There is not enough disk space to start the application'.

Workaround: Do not run Strategy Games of the World from Kid's Room. Launch it from the desktop.

18) LivePix


LivePix 1.1 Installation Problems: Custom Install, installs a minimum install.
Fee or Free?

Description: Sometimes a custom install installs as a minimum install.

Workaround: Uninstall and custom install again. The problem will not appear twice.

Orientation program doesn't end with ESC.
Fee or Free?

Description: If the ESC key is pressed at the very beginning of the Orientation program, the Orientation doesn't quit.

Workaround: Press the EXIT icon.

Systems Affected: Stealth II

Tutorial shows function that is not in the software.
Fee or Free?

Description: The orientation program shows samples of distorting and shadowing, which are not available in the SE version of LivePix.

Workaround: The full version includes these features. There is a disclaimer on the CD that states these effects/functions are not available on this version of LivePix.

Delete key does not work when editing text.

Description: Delete key doesn't work when adding key

Workaround: Use backspace key

Receive "Diskette is full Message" when diskette is empty.

Description: This message pops up when it should say something like "Not enough space for file." This message shows up because many of the LivePix project files are bigger than the space availble on a diskette.

Workaround: Save the file to a hard drive.

Popup after install informs you about required or optional processes.
Fee or Free?

Description: Popup after install informs you about required or optional processes. This message shouldn't be there.

Workaround: Ignore the invalid message.

19) MechWarrior II


Rapid Resume+Screen Saver kicks in after 1 minute/possible lockup.

Description: If a screen or video saver is enabled and it's set to start after 1 minute of inactivity AND rapid resume is enabled, the system will lock during the opening movie if there is no mouse or keyboard activity.

Workaround: Move the mouse and press a key. Set the screen saver to start after at least 2 minutes of inactivity; disable the screen saver; disable rapid resume.

Suspend from Jade Falcon Clan Hall screen locks system.

Description: If you suspend from the Jade Falcon Clan Hall screen, the system locks. Suspends work fine from all other screens.

Workaround: Don't suspend from this screen.

Rapid Resume from Mission Briefing screen, task bar will obscure the controls at the bottom of the screen (launch, abort).

Description: Upon recovering from Rapid Resume, if they were in the Mission Briefing screen, the task bar will now be covering the launch and abort buttons.

Workaround: To recover, close the application and restart. To avoid in future: Set your task bar to be auto-hide prior to Rapid Resume,

Printing online help if you don't have a printer can lock the system.

Description: If you try to print the online help and don't have a printer defined, the default device is "Aptiva fax." If you try to send the help file to a fax machine while the game is running, the system will lock when the transmission begins.

Workaround: Don't send a fax during the game.

Opening a movie video, the sound is cut off when game starts and video puzzle is running.

Description: If you start the MechWarrior while a video puzzle is running, the opening movie video and sound are cut off.

Workaround: Don't run other applications while playing this game (game warns you about this during installation).

MIDI file will not play.

Description: If you enter MechWarrior, then try to play a MIDI file, the MIDI file will not play.
Workaround: The only way to get a MIDI file to play while MechWarrior2 is running is to start the MIDI file before you enter MW2.

Suspend in game, then can't launch mission.

Description: After a suspend with the game running, the taskbar cuts off the menu in Mission Briefing room, making it impossible to accept a new mission.

Workaround: Select New Allegiance from the pull-down, reselect the current clan and mission and the buttons at the bottom will be restored.

Suspend/Resume gets message that game already started with auto-insert.
Fee or Free? Fee (Industry Wide Issue)

Description: When you either suspend manually or automatically while playing MechWarrior, upon resuming, an information window comes up that says, "You are already playing MechWarrior." You must click OK then to go ahead, but the game resumes normally. This only occurs if auto-insert is enabled.

Workaround: Turn off auto-insert notification.

Video pauses (stops/starts) when MW2 launched from Kid's Room.
Fee or Free? Free (Aptiva Specific Issue)

Description: When Mech Warrior2 is launched from KR, the video pauses momentarily every few seconds and the audio seems to be unaffected.

To reproduce:
1. Go into Kid's Room add programs, add MechWarrior 2.
2. Start Kid's Room, then select MechWarrior2 from icon marquee.
3. Sign on and pick any mission.
4. Shortly after mission starts, you will notice the video pauses momentarily, but the audio seems unaffected. While running from kids room, a full install is needed.

After uninstalling and doing a full install, problem still exists when MechWarrior2 is launched from Kid's Room.

Workaround: Launch MechWarrior from the desktop, not from Kid's Room.

Mech Warrior 2 very choppy with AOL

Description: Mech Warrior plays very choppy when you are also connected to America Online.

1.Start America Online
2.Start Mech Warrior and play a game

This application requires a LOT of resources to run without glitches. First of all, make sure you have a full-blown install.

Workaround: Close other applications while playing the game.

Systems Affected: 2134, 2176; 2159 non-MMx; 2159-S80, S90; Flash; 2162; 2161

Add/remove programs cannot find the installation program.
Fee or Free? Free (Aptiva Specific Issue)

Description: With Autoplay off, when you try to install from the Windows Add/Remove Programs, Mech Warrior 2 cannot find the installation program and wants you to specify it or browse for it. As a side note, Aptiva Installer finds the install program.

MW2 doesn't use the usual install programs, like SETUP.EXE or INSTALL.EXE. It uses _MINST.EXE. The Aptiva Installer knows about this MW2 install program because it's hard-coded. Therefore, since the ADD/REMOVE program can't find the install program, it prompts you to give it one.

Workaround: Give the install program, _MINST.EXE. Or use the Aptiva Installer to install.

Page fault opening second instance of NETMECH.
Fee or Free? Free (Aptiva Specific Issue)

Description: Page fault error when starting second instance of Net Mech.
To reproduce:
1. Start Net Mech
2. Enter call sign and press select.
3. Start another instance of Net Mech either by Start Menu or opening CD drive and closing (with Auto insert on).
4. Push select and the following error comes up:
"can't load DirectPlay service c:\windows\SYSTEM\dpserial.dll"
5. Press OK and the following error comes up :
"MECH2 has caused an invalid page fault in module NETMECHW.DLL"

Workaround: Only run one instance of NetMech.

20) MS Works 4.0


Uninstall Works does not delete links.
Fee or Free?

Description: Using Aptiva Installer, uninstall Works 4.0. The links for Works 4.0 are still in the Productivity folder, and in the Start, Programs, Productivity, Works 4.0 - link is removed from the Start Menu as a separate item.
When you click on the blank icon, you get an error that says PDLIB32.DLL The link files do not work. However, the MSWorks icon from Start Programs does.

Workaround: Manually delete the links in the Start Menu and Productivity Folder, or reinstall Works.

Pure Speech "stutters" when giving prompt when system used.

Description: When calling into RingCentral using Voice for Remote control and, at the same time, applications are being open and/or closed, occasionly get "stuttering." That is, the prompt heard over the phone lines and speakers sounds something like "Would you like to leave a me-e-e-e-esssage?" After the "stutter," it recovers. The stutter usually lasts less than a second, two seconds at most.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Choose "Use Voice for Remote Control" (Menu => Options => Answering =>Use Voice for Remote Control.)
2. Call into RingCentral and log in instead of leaving a message. (It does happen sometimes when someone is leaving a message but in order to reliably reproduce, it is necessary to log in.) Do this by saying "No" or "Log in" when asked "Do you want to leave a message?"
3. At the main menu say "Help." (Continue to do this whenever a voice prompt is given so that you can recreate.)
4. While the voice prompt is given, do things like open and close Notepad, Wordpad, and Paint.

Workaround: This is the only place that it will happen.

If a partial file transfer occurs, pressing play on EXE may GPF.

Description: If a file transfer to RingCentral BBS occurs and is not completed, an invalid EXE file will be listed in the New messages. If you press play to play new messages, a GPF may occur because there was an attempt to launch an EXE that is not complete. If you have the Message pad open and the message selected, pressing play will give a message "Unable to play this message."

The occassional GPFs seem consistent with launching the files from Windows Explorer. Using Windows Explorer to launch the files contained in C:\RC500\DATA either gives a message "Error: The C:\rc500\data\[filename] file appears to be corrupt. Reinstall the file and then try again" or results in a similar GPF.

Workaround: Transfer the file again. This may occur on any RingCentral product.

Reinstalling RingCentral has choice of Productivity and leaves Aptiva Communications empty.

There is no way for the program to install into a second level folder. That is, you cannot choose to have it installed under Aptiva Communications under the Aptiva Productivity folder. The program gives prompts for the folder to place it in based only on first level folders.

Workaround: Type Aptiva Communications to create a new folder.

1. Play a CD and minimize it.
2. Bring up Ring Central and minimize it.
3. Bring up Compuserve and then disconnect.
4. Try to receive a fax.
5. Ring Central plays no greeting and hangs up.

Steps to recreate:

- Check the box "Reserve minimum space for cabinet"
- Open Approach
- Open File Register.mpr
- Click on "Enter New Customer"
- A screen comes up thatt looks like it's scrolling.

Workaround: Unselect the "Reserve minimum space for cabinet" option. Reopen the file.

Description: No audio is transmitted by Lotus SmartSuite phone dialer; the dialer calls correctly, but no audio can be heard on the called phone, and no audio from the called phone can be heard at the computer. The computer microphone can be heard on the system speakers. Lotus Dialer uses the Windows 95 Dialer. The Windows 95 dialer is a dialer, not a speaker phone-capable application. It's intended use is to dial a phone number but it does not handle a speaker phone connection.

The correct way to use it is as follows
1. Start => Programs => Accesories => Phone Dialer
2. Type in the phone number that you want to dial and click dial.
3. When the other party picks up (you can hear them but they can't hear you), pick up a handset, either connected to the modem or another phone outlet, and then click "Hang up."

Workaround: Use another application, like RingCentral or Communication Center, to dial out.

Error installing SmartSuite while running other apps

Description: While installing SmartSuite96 on the e: partition with seven applications running--IBM AV, Ring Central, MSWorks, .WAV file player and Solitaire--the Lotus dialog box progress indicator was on the screen at 77%, showing file c:\windows\system\mfcoleui.dll, when another dialog box came up saying:
A GENERAL ERROR OCCURED WHILE TRYING TO DECOMPRESS FILES FROM G:\SUITE96\LOTUS030.DSK.
Clicking OK brought up another box saying INSTALLATION DID NOT COMPLETE. Clicking OK again exited Lotus install application back to the Aptiva Installer.

Steps to Recreate:
Using the Aptiva Installer, choose the first icon to install, Lotus 123, Release 5. Install on the e: partition and choose defaults. Run other applications while Lotus installs in the background. Lotus Install program tells you that other applications running while installing may cause the installation process to fail.

In this case, the file c:\windows\system\mfcoleui.dll is a Microsoft FUndation Class file (DLL) that has some functions with OLE objects. This file could be used by any program that calls any of the functions in this DLL; if that program is running while Lotus Smart Suite is installing, when the installation process tries to replace this file, it gets an Access denied or Sharing violation return, and the process terminates.

Workaround: Close all applications before installing Lotus SmartSuite.

Cannot import .TIF files to Word Pro document

Steps to Recreate:

2. Open an existing or new document in Word Pro.
3. Click on file>Import picture.
4. Browse through RC500 dir. and find a fax (*.TIF).
5. The preview box in Import dialog shows a blank with "invalid pic" error reading the graphic.

Workaround: If you need to put the fax file in a WordPro document, you can open it in Freelance Graphics, save it there as a TIF file again and then open it in WordPro. Another option is to open it in Paint, save it as a BMP file and open it in WordPro as a BMP.

Clicking Remove makes it appear to complete, though the icon still remains in Show Installed Programs in the installer.

This will be corrected in SmartSuite 97.

5. The Find Setup Wizard comes up--click Next, then Finish.

Workaround: There is no workaround for the Search function. Please use the other help functions.

To change to small fonts:
1. Right-click on the Desktop.
2. Click on the Settings Tab.
3. Choose Small Fonts from the Drop Down Menu in the lower left corner.

Second volume control is present on task bar after driver install

Bus Tour videos play back "jerky"

Description: When playing any bus tour video, the video seems to be very jerky. The most likely explanation for the jumpy video is that the MCI application is polling in its message loop. This kind of performance hit will occur to any 32-bit application that is running concurrently with a 16-bit application that polls within its message loop.

Workaround: There is no workaround for this problem.

After suspending, movies become grainy or coarse

Description: When you suspend during any of the movies and then return, after the Rapid Resume screen comes on, the movie becomes very grainy or coarse. (Running in 640x480 with 256 colors.)

The next video that is played is correct. This is true even if you're playing a video tour (sequence of videos). This does not occur when the videos are played through the Active Movie player, only when played through Monuments.

Workaround: Close the video and start it again.

352x240 MPEG frame remains on IBM RR screen

Description: When suspending while running MPEG with ActiveMovie at 352x240 pixels, the last frame played is left on the IBM Rapid Resume screen while the system is suspending. This does not occur if the clip is played in full-screen mode. When resuming, the clip comes up and plays correctly.

Workaround: Do not suspend in the middle of an MPEG Clip. Run the movie in full-screen mode.

Volume Slider does not work on Monument video player

Description: Play a monument movie, using the mouse try to slide the volume control up and down. The slider moves, but volume control doesn't change.

Workaround: This is caused by confusion of the application due to the presence of two wave drivers in the system.

Selecting AOL as Internet SP for WB97 causes errors

Description: Selecting AOL as Internet Service Provider for World Book causes errors.

Steps to Recreate:
1. Click on World Book Plus icon.

2. Select a topic from Our Century.

3. The following messages appear:
- "WB97 Would you like to connect to World Book Online now? ok/cancel"
- "WB97 Your Internet Service Provider is not configured. Do you want to configure it now? ok/cancel"

4. Select America Online 3.0 from Configure ISP list.
The following error message appears:
- "DLRAOL An error occurred while attempting to detect your AOL Screens. AOL may not be installed or may not be configured correctly. OR: The AOL path you entered may be invalid. Click "Auto Configure" or delete the current entry and save."

5. Select ok.
The following message appears:
- "DLRAOL Auto configure could not find winsock. Please manually configure your winsock."

6. Two possible scenarios occur, depending on the response to #5:
a. Choose cancel.
- "WB97 Online system configuration cancelled. Online services will not be available."

b. Enter AOL password and save.
- "WB97 A problem has occured initializing your Internet service provider. Online services will be disabled
until Windows is restarted."

This message appears each time WB is restarted, even after restarting Windows.

This message appears each time WB is restarted, even after restarting Windows. The error mentioned in 6b remains after uninstalling and reinstalling WB. After step #5, the additional new message is:
- " A problem occurred connecting to your Internet service provider (ISP). Please verify that your ISP is connected and try your selection again (Error code 16391)."

The product does not work with AOL 2.5. It was designed to work only with AOL 3.0, in either the 16-bit or 32-bit versions.

Workaround: In the README file on the CD, as well as the insert that will ship with the product in the Aptiva, include instructions for configuring the Internet access with an ISP that is not directly supported by World Book. Basically, you configure World Book to use the "generic dialup connection" and make sure you logon to your ISP prior to starting WorldBook. Then, when you select to go ONLINE, the connection is made, registration can occur, and you can access the ONLINE portion of WorldBook.

WB Tour 97 does not show as uninstalled programs

Description: When World Book Tour is uninstalled, it does not show up in "Show Uninstalled Programs." World Book Tour does when it is uninstalled.

After uninstalling WBTour 97, the installer shows it in the Install tab. When uninstalling WBTour 97, the uninstall process asks about deleting shared files; in this case, WBTOUR.EXE. If you select NO, this file is not deleted in either folder. The installer shows it as installed since the executable it looks for is still there.

Workaround: Delete WBTOUR.EXE
