TP 600 - Installing Windows 2000 Beta build 1877 on a blank hard drive

These instructions were written based on installing Windows 2000 Beta build 1877 on a blank hard drive.
1. Boot the machine and allow the preload to install (ON AC POWER)
2. Copy contents of I386 subidr into i386 subdir on D:\ drive. This is easier done with the preload since drag and drop copies subdirectories as well.
3. Boot a Windows 95 start-up diskette and format C: only.
4. While still booted to the Windows 95 start-up disk, type the following command at the A:\ prompt:
EDIT D:\I386\TXTSETUP.SIF <ENTER>

Press Alt S, and then press <enter> and search for ACPIENABLE.
5. Scroll down about 10 or so lines and find the following line:
ACPIenable=2

Change the line to read:
ACPIenable=1

Save the file and exit the editor

6. Change to the D:\i386 subdir and type WINNT /B and press <enter>
7. Press <enter> at the path where windows NT files are located.
8. Please wait while setup copies files.
9. Reboot the ThinkPad (remove floppy diskette first).
10. Press <enter> to continue setup.
11. Press <enter> again.
12. Press F8 to agree to EULA.
13. Make sure C:\ is highlighted and press <enter>.
14. You are prompted to choose your file system - (all our tests have been on FAT)
<enter on leave current file system intact> <enter>

15. Windows 2000 starts checking the hard drive.
16. It then begins copying files (this will take some time).
17. System reboots.
18. The graphical interface starts.
19. It is then preparing to start the Windows NT setup.
20. Click on Next at the Windows NT Setup Wizard.
21. The Wizard will install the Windows NT Security Features and then will install and configure devices.
22. Click on Next at the Regional settings.
23. Enter your Name and Organization.
24. Enter your computer name and the Admin password.
25. Click Next at Video screen.. (Installs are usually best at default choices).
26. Click Next at Time and Date if correct, if not correct then enter the correct information and then click on Next.
27. Click Next at installing Networking.. (Network cards should NOT be in the machine during installation).
28. Please while examination occurs.
29. More files are copied.
30. Windows 2000 configures your computer.
31. Click Finish to finialize and reboot.
32. Your machine will reboot to the admin password. Enter the password to continue.
33. Change background to Winnt256.
34. Insert the ThinkPad Utility Diskette 1 into the floppy drive. Run A:\SETUP from Thinkpad Utility disk 1 to begin installation.
35. Click Next at the Welcome screen.
36 Click Next at subdir prompt to accept the defaults.
37. Make sure Custom is selected and then click Next.
38. Remove check mark in Personalization Editor box.
39 Click Next.
40. Click Next at Program Folder option to accept the default.
41. Files will start to be copied and you will be prompted to insert the second diskette.


42. The program groups will be created and Setup will prompt you to restart the system. Click Finish.
43. Video install - right click on the desktop, select Settings, change colors to High Color 16 bit change Screen Area to 1024x768, click OK, click Restart with new settings. Click Yes to restart the system.
44. Audio install - Audio is installed by base OS installed.
45. ACP Modem install


Your system is prepared to install the Thinkpad Modem Driver software. Windows NT 5 will only detect the device during system setup. Would you like to restart system now
YES - NO

46 Click Yes, and then remove the diskette.
47. Reboot and insert the diskette after the admin password is entered.
48. The Found new hardware wizard appears. Click on search for suitable driver and then click Next.
49. Remove the checks from CD and Windows Update and then click Next.
50. Click Next at driver file search. The search should find A:\MWTPDSP.INI.
51. It will then begin copying files. When prompted, insert the next diskette. Click Finish.
52. When the Found new hardware wizard runs again it will find the ThinkPad Modem.
53. Enable the Internal Modem in the TP Configuration program and restart the system.
54. The modem will be enabled on COM 3.... the modem quick test passes but it does not have modem dial tone. Modem successfully dialled IBM BBS.
55. TrackPoint 4 - Start the hardware wizard via control panel, click Next and select Add new hardware, (last item) click Next, click Add new hardware wizard.. let the wizard search for new drivers. Click Next, click No, click Next, click Mouse, click Next, click Have disk, click OK (at this point, make sure that the TrackPoint IV device driver diskette for Windows 2000 is in the floppy drive). Select the IBM PS/2 TrackPoint, click Next, click Next, click Yes to installing controlling keyboard devices. Click Finish. Reboot the machine.

If errors occur after TrackPoint install, boot the machine into Safe mode and use the New Hardware Wizard to remove the TrackPoint drivers.
