Aptiva - Multiple modems automatically installed
Applicable to: World-Wide
Situation:
You find that your system says that there are multiple modems installed when there is only one modem in your system. One or more of these "modems" do not work.
Solution:
1) Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Modem. Highlight and remove ALL installed modems.
2) Shut the system down.
3) Remove the modem from your system.
4) Clean the gold "fingers" on the edge connector of the modem with a red pencil eraser. Light pressure is sufficient. Brush off any dust or rubber fragments.
5) Reinstall the modem in your system.
When you boot the system, it should detect the modem and install the necessary drivers. Only one modem should be installed and it should work properly.
Explanation:
The edge connector of the modem is corroded or dirty. Cleaning the connector with a red pencil eraser removes the corrosion or dirt.
