Aptiva - Uncompressing a Stacker Drive

Applicable to: United States

With ongoing changes in the price of hard drives, the temptation to add another hard drive to the system may be irresistible. Getting a second drive will provide a large amount of storage space for new applications and data files, allowing you to migrate some or all of the applications from a compressed drive to the new drive.

Depending on the types of applications that you run, you may decide that the space benefits provided by the Stacker disk compression program are not needed and you may wish to remove the data file compression from the drive. To uncompress a Stacker compressed drive, use the following steps:

1.) Exit from Windows or DOSSHELL if either is being used and go to the DOS prompt. Do not attempt to use the DOS prompt icon in Windows or the <Shift>+<F9> keys in DOSSHELL when you are preparing to remove disk compression.

2.) At the DOS prompt, enter the command STAC. This will bring up a menu and a list of the utility functions.

3.) Select the Uncompress option, then select the drive ID that is to be uncompressed.

4.) The decompression of the selected drive will now begin. This function can take some time to complete, since it will need to defragment the compressed drive, set up the uncompressed space for use, and then move all files from the compressed drive to the uncompressed space.

5.) When the decompression completes, the program prompts for other drives that you might want to uncompress. If so, select the desired drive and repeat the above process.

6.) If you have uncompressed all drives, the Stacker program will prompt you to determine if you want to remove Stacker from the system configuration. Select Remove Stacker to have the Stacker files removed, as well as to alter CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT as necessary.
