Aptiva - 2462 Error Message and P24T Processor Upgrades

Problem:

When a customer upgrades their machine to a Pentium Overdrive processor (P24T) on a Maple with a Grape3 or Grape4 planar, they will receive a video POST error. In approximately one out of seven boots, the customer will receive a 2462 error. Affected models are:

2168-57C
2155-78C
2155-87C
2155-79C
2168-SR1
2168-US1
2168-BB1
2155-CC1
2155-NM1
2168-38C

Solution:

The customer should be sent a BIOS upgrade kit, FRU #76H6938.

Installation of the new BIOS requires removing a PROM from the system board and replacing it with another. The kit includes chip puller and instructions for completing the installation.

Background:

A problem with the video BIOS was found to be causing the problem. This problem was corrected with the new chip. There are no other improvements to the BIOS other than this fix. This BIOS should be sent ONLY to customers who are having a problem when they install a P24T processor.

This kit is available in LENA and keyed to the affected models.

The FRU number for the BIOS upgrade kit is 76H6938.
