Crossbrand - Loss of Registry and Backup files in Windows 95

Applicable to: World-Wide

Symptom:
This kind of failure is often traceable to memory system problems (intermittent RAM or cache, bad controller chip, overclocking or improper timing stings in BIOS, too high I/O bus speeds <an adapter that can't keep up>). Windows 95 (and WARP) seem to drive the hardware "to the max" exposing problems that may have been unseen with DOS/WINDOWS 3.x.

One of the first things to try is turning OFF L2 CACHE which is often available as a BIOS option - if problem disappears get your hardware fixed. Many if not most of todays home PCs are sold without parity or ECC memory/checking so errors are not detected/reported making diagnosis and repair of RAM quite hard (swap parts, reinstall, try, ...).

Fix:
Some useful general advice :

Two utilities which appear on the CDROM version (as well as the MS WEB) that every Windows 95 user should install and USE are:

CFGBACK provides a nice GUI for named backup/restore of the registry (HINT: always use CFGBACK to create a fresh snapshot of the registry before a full system tape backup <since the restore software in such utilities as MS BACKUP may, in fact, not fully reset the registry - this gives you a second chance> OR A RESTORE of any kind <its easy to accidentally place a registry on a partial backup of non-system files when using MS BACKUP and unknowingly cause the registry to be corrupted when restoring what you thought was non-system files>).

ERU creates a recovery diskette (or hard disk directory) containing a restore program and copies of key system files including the registry (a GUI allows you to select which system files are included when the restore diskette/directory is created).
