Aptiva - How to obtain and install VESA BIOS extensions for Mxx/Axx
systems

Applicable to: World-Wide

Some software applications, most notably games, may require that you install VESA BIOS extensions before the software will operate properly.
Obtaining the VESA BIOS drivers:

For Mxx and Axx model Aptivas, the VESA BIOS drivers can be downloaded by directing your web browser to the following URL: http://www.tridentmicro.com/trident/drivers/vesa.exe

You will need to download the VESA.EXE file to a temporary directory on your hard disk. These drivers will load the VBE version 1.2 extensions, if you have a program that requires VESA 2.0 or higher, you will need to obtain third party drivers. Many games that require VESA BIOS extensions with a version of 2.0 or higher already include the necessary VBE files.

Installing the VESA BIOS drivers:

The VESA BIOS extensions do not need to be permanently installed on your system. Instead, they must be loaded before you attempt to run any program that requires them. To load the VESA BIOS extensions, follow the steps below:

1. Shutdown to an MS-DOS prompt by clicking "Start"->"Shutdown"->"Shutdown to MS-DOS Mode".

2. At the DOS prompt, type "vesa", and press "Enter". If the Trident VESA driver is in your path, the BIOS extensions will be loaded and you will see a message indicating that drivers are installed. If you downloaded the VESA.EXE file to a directory that is not in your path, you will need to change to that directory before running vesa.

3. You can now start your MS-DOS programs normally. Note that you will need to load these drivers each time you wish to run a DOS program that requires VESA BIOS extensions. If you use the VESA.EXE program frequently, you may wish to add the line c:\<directoryname>\vesa.exe, where <directoryname> is the name of the directory where the VESA.EXE file is stored, to the end of your DOSSTART.BAT file.
