Aptiva - 2140/2142 Considerations - PC Doctor Diags

Applicable to: World-Wide

1st test of each test mode of DirectDraw has bugs.

Detail:
To recreate: Run direct draw test in Windows Diagnostics, note the following items: TRIDENT VIDEO: -VIDEO MODE TESTS (Test 1 of 14): -desktop shows in the corners where it isn't drawn over -in the other tests(2-14) there is a grey background -PAGE FLIP TESTS (Test 1 of 14): -part of each animated icon located toward the bottom of screen shows during this test(background page), in the other tests (2-14) the animated icons don't show on the background page -BIT BLOCK TRANSFER (Test 1 of 14): -part of each animated icon located toward the bottom of screen shows during this test (background page), in the other tests(2-14) the animated icons don't show on the background page. ATI GRAPHICS: (ATI Video/36 tests): -the same problem occurs during video mode testing -there is no problem with the page flip mode test -bit block transfer mode test(1 of 36): -worse than TRIDENT.

Answer / Workaround:
First, the reason the background shows up in the first modes Is because the first test is always the same resolution as your desktop. So if you are in 800x600, then that's what the first test will be. But if you're in 600x480, then it will be in that. Second, the animated icons is a problem, but there's nothing PC Doctor can do about it because desktop customisation is writing the icons directly into the buffer, that's why they always show up in the front buffer. There is no workaround available at this time.

Answer / Workaround:
USB drivers and USB devices are ONLY supported under Windows 95 There is no tests for USB as DOS cannot "see" this port.

Cursor in Joystick 2 window appears jumpy.

Detail:
To recreate: - Connect joystick to system, - Insert Diags CD in the system, - Run joystick diags test, - Cursor in Joystick 1 window first appears jumpy. But after moving the stick and pressing the buttons on the joystick, it appears stable., -However, cursor in Joystick 2 window still appear jumpy even after the buttons and throttle/tophat are pressed.

Answer / Workaround:
This is a limitation of the DoctorDiags joystick test program. They can not calibrate the second joystick because there is no X axis. Therefore, the program thinks that the joystick is in it's initial state because the X-axis never moves. The test still works, it just looks jumpy and is difficult to see.

Printer test does NOT list all printers.

Detail:
The DOS - Printer test does NOT list all printers. To recreate: Boot from Diag CD, Run Advanced Diags -> Interactive Tests-> Printer. PC Doctor only gives three choices. If the user has a bubble jet or ink jet, they might be confused.

Answer / Workaround:
The diagnostics can not possibly support all possible printers. But the Dot Matrix options should work for just about all printers. So, if the customer would still like to have a specific test for their printer, they can contact Watergate Software's sales line: 510-547-2281 http://www.ws.com/ or support@ws.com.

Printed log file contains some garbled characters.

Detail:
The print out of the log file has some garbled output in the "Testing Initiated" section when printed from DoctorDiags to an HP Deskjet printer. The text after each of the headings ("Test type," "Logging," "Action on error," "Batch file," and "Log output") is affected. Essentially, characters are missing or are getting printed on top one another. Prints fine on other printer
brands.

Answer / Workaround:
To workaround, print the log on a different printer, or you can save the log to disk, then open and print from Notepad.
