Aptiva - AT&T WinModem listed as serial mouse

Problem:
AT&T (Lucent) WinModem is listed as a serial mouse on select Aptiva models
Possible Errors:
Complete Problem Description:
If AT&T WinModem is removed from Device Manager and you perform a software recovery or use APTRSTOR to recover the C:\WINDOWS\INF\ATTMODEM.INF and C:\WINDOWS\INF\ATTWAVE.INF files from the Aptiva Product Recovery CD (P/N 76H3725). To download APTRSTOR.EXE, click here 
. The system will then list the following on the Diagnostics tab of the Modems Properties screen:
Port Installed
Serial Mouse
COM1 No Modem Installed
COM2 No Modem Installed
The WinModem will not function properly like this. If you attempt to view More Info for the serial mouse, you will get a message saying "Could not open port." If you attempt to view the properties from the General tab of Modems Properties, you will get a message saying "The modem properties could not be displayed because the modem information is corrupt." If the onscreen instructions are followed, the system will install two copies of the AT&T WinModem driver and still retain the serial mouse setting and the modem will still not function.
Solution:
If the ATTMODEM.INF and ATTWAVE.INF files are copied over from the \DISK\ATTMODEM\ATTMODEM folder on the Diagnostics and Utilities CD (P/N 76H3721) to the C:\WINDOWS\INF folder, and all driver entries for the AT&T WinModem are removed from Device Manager, and the system is rebooted, the drivers will install properly and the modem will function normally.

The "good" files are:
ATTMODEM.INF 34KB 10/17/96 10:51am
ATTWAVE.INF 3KB 11/9/96 4:43pm

2. Diagnostic CD #12J4047 from g:\disk\attmodem\attmodem\drvs\inf
3. Diagnostic CD #12J4047 from g:\ibmbuild\attmodem\windows\inf as the file Ltmodem.sav
4. 2162-xxx machines from the c:\windows\inf with preload indentifier VF2US0N
