IBM PC300PL (Type 6562, 6592) - 187 POST error (HelpCenter/Servicer only)

Applicable to: World-Wide

SYMPTOM:
After powering on the system, the following 187 POST error is returned:

"187 Clear Administration Password"

PROBLEM ISOLATION AIDS:
This tip applies to the IBM PC300PL Series 6562/6592 systems.

Under normal conditions, the 187 POST error will only be returned when the system CMOS has been cleared using the Clear CMOS jumper J15.

The intermittent 187 POST error condition may be observed if a device connected to the parallel port is powered on prior to powering on the system.

FIX:
The 187 POST error condition can be corrected by either of the following methods:

1. Power on parallel port devices after powering on the system.

2. Once the 187 POST error has occurred, exit the Setup utility without saving any changes. The system will then boot normally.

If the 187 POST error condition becomes persistent, or the customer is unable to power on the system prior to powering on parallel port devices, contact the appropriate IBM HelpCenter for further assistance.

IBM SERVICER ONLY INFORMATION
Permanent fix is to replace the system board with FRU Part Number 07L7353.

Use the following information to verify that FRU parts contain the necessary updated National LM78 component.

The POST 187 error is related to a non-J revision level of the National LM78 chip on the planar. To locate the LM78 part on the planar, open the system cover and find position U26 on the planar under the floppy drive. In particular, with the front of the system facing you, the LM78 chip is in
between the processor socket and battery, just above the dip switches on the planar. It is a square National chip and will be marked with LM78CCVF. If the National LM78 part is marked with LM78CCVF-J, then it is already the revised J part.
