IBM PC - OS/2 and OS/2 Warp preload CD-ROM installation guide

Applicable to: World-Wide

Special Instructions for PC 730 and PC 750 Computers with the SelectaSystem Feature

If the following conditions are true, use the instructions in this section to install IDE CD-ROM drive device drivers for DOS/Windows and OS/2 Warp operating system:

- You have an IBM PC 730 or PC 750 computer with the SelectaSystem feature (OS/2 Warp Connect and DOS/Windows)
- You are installing an IBM IDE CD-ROM drive.
- You have the latest IDECDROM.EXE file from the IBM Web site or the IBM Bulletin Board System.

1. Insert the device driver diskette (IDECDROM.EXE) into drive A.

2. At a DOS prompt, type A:CDSETUP and press Enter. The installation program copies the DOS and OS/2 Warp device drivers to the hard disk, updates the CONFIG.SYS files for DOS and OS/2, and updates the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

3. When the installation is complete, restart the computer.

Installing IDE CD-ROM Drive Device Drivers for OS/2 2.1 or Later

Note: OS/2 2.1 refers to OS/2 2.1, OS/2 2.11, and OS/2 for Windows 2.1. To install the IDE CD-ROM drive device drivers for OS/2 2.1 or OS/2 Warp 3.0, follow these instructions:

You will need the diskettes that come with your OS/2 operating system. Depending on the version of OS/2 you are using, the procedure might vary slightly from the following.

1. From the OS/2 Desktop, double-click on OS/2 System.

2. Double-click on System Setup.

3. Double-click on Selective Install. The System Configuration menu is displayed.

4. Click on CD-ROM Device Support, and click on OK.

5. If you are using OS/2 2.1, click on OK.

6. Click on Other, and click on OK.

7. When the System Configuration menu is displayed again, click on OK.

8. From the OS/2 Setup and Installation window, click on Install.

9. The Source Directory window is displayed. If the computer does not have preinstalled OS/2, you might need to insert the installation diskettes into the specified drive; click on Install and follow the instructions on screen.

10. From the OS/2 Setup and Installation window, click on OK. Do not shut down or restart the computer.

11. Insert the "IBM IDE CD-ROM Option/Device Driver" diskette into drive A.

12. From the System Setup window, click on Device Driver Install.

13. From the OS/2 Device Driver Installation window, verify the source and destination, and click on Install.

14. In the Select Device Drivers window, you are given four options:

OS/2 2.1 IDE CD-ROM support for ISA machines
OS/2 2.1 IDE CD-ROM support for Micro Channel machines
OS/2 WARP 3.0 IDE CD-ROM support for ISA machines
OS/2 WARP 3.0 CD-ROM support for Micro Channel machines

Click on the appropriate option for your computer, and click on OK.

15. From the OS/2 Device Driver Installation window, click on Exit, and follow the instructions on the screen. Do not shut down or restart the computer.

- If you have an ISA computer, the new version of IBM1S506.ADD is copied to the root directory on the hard disk. The old version is still in the OS2 directory (for OS/2 2.1) or the OS2\BOOT directory (for OS/2 Warp); to avoid confusion, rename this file to IBM1S506.OLD.

- If you have a Micro Channel computer, a replacement for IBM2ADSK.ADD is copied to the root directory on the hard disk. The old version is still in the OS2 directory (for OS/2 2.1) or the OS2\BOOT directory (for OS/2 Warp); to avoid confusion, rename this file to IBM2ADSK.OLD.

16. Shut down and restart the computer to make the changes take effect.

Customizing the OS/2 IDE CD-ROM Drive Software

You may need to customize the OS/2 setup installed by the DDINSTAL program. This section describes the parameters that you can use to customize your software.

Make a backup copy of your CONFIG.SYS file before you make any changes.

You can add one or more of the following statements to the CONFIG.SYS file:

DEVICE=OS2CDROM.DMD [options]
OS/2 uses the CD-ROM drive device manager driver to control all CD-ROM drives. The following options are available:
- [/V] This option instructs the computer to display the installation details (verbose mode).
- [/Q] This option suppresses messages during initialization (quiet mode).

BASEDEV=IBMIDECD.FLT [options]
This is the device driver filter for ATAPI (IDE) CD-ROM drives. The following option is available:
- [/V] This option instructs the computer to display installation details (verbose mode). This can be helpful when you are troubleshooting CD-ROM drive device driver problems.

IFS=C:\OS2\BOOT\CDFS.IFS /Q
This the CD-ROM file system for OS/2. The following options are available:
- [/C:n]This option indicates how many 64 KB segments are used for the sector cache. The default is two 64 KB segments (n=2).
- [/M:n] This option indicates the maximum number of file sectors to be read at a time. The default is 8 sectors (n=8).
- [/K] This option instructs the computer to use the Kanji supplementary volume descriptor.
- [/Q] This option suppresses messages during initialization.

BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD (for ISA computers) and
BASEDEV=IBM2IDE.ADD (for Micro Channel computers)
The IDE adapter device driver controls IDE hard disk drives and IDE CD-ROM drives. To see the optional parameters that are available, from an OS/2 command prompt, type HELP IBM1S506 and press Enter. Use this command for Micro Channel computers also. Special parameters are required if your computer has an IDE controller that does not use a standard interrupt. Refer to the /A and /IRQ parameters in the OS/2 help utility.
