Aptiva-PS/1 - Can I start at the 4-Option Menu?
Applicable to: United States
NOTE: Some PS/1 models have a file named PS1START.BAT instead of START.BAT. If you have this file in your PS1TOOLS subdirectory, substitute PS1START.BAT at any point in the following procedure that refers to START.BAT.
If you have a PS/1 model with Windows 3.1 pre-installed, you can have your computer start at the PS/1 4-option menu instead of automatically starting Microsoft Windows. The START.BAT file, which is located in the PS1TOOLS subdirectory, controls the start-up programs. This file will need to be edited to change the way the system starts.
Before starting this procedure, you should make a backup copy of the START.BAT file. Type the following command and press Enter to make a backup copy:
COPY C:\PS1TOOLS\START.BAT C:\PS1TOOLS\START.BAK
You will see the message: 1 File(s) Copied.
The START.BAT file can be changed by using the DOS Editor. To use the Editor, follow this procedure:
1. Exit Windows by pressing and holding the Alt key, then press the F4 key.
2. At the PS/1 Menu, select Option 3, GO TO DOS PROMPT.
3. At the DOS prompt, type the following command and press Enter:
EDIT C:\PS1TOOLS\START.BAT
The START.BAT file will be displayed.
4. Press the down arrow key four (4) times, until the cursor is on the line that reads ":STARTWIN".
5. Press and hold the Shift key and press the down arrow two (2) more times. The two lines that read :STARTWIN and WIN.COM should be highlighted.
6. Press and hold the Shift key and press the Delete key to delete these two lines. This will hold these two lines in memory until you are ready to paste them back into the Editor (step 12).
7. Press the down arrow until the cursor is on the line that reads "GOTO STARTWIN".
8. Change this line to read "GOTO MENU" (without the quotes).
9. Press the down arrow until the cursor is on the line that reads "GOTO STARTWIN".
10. Change this line to read "IF ERRORLEVEL 1 GOTO STARTWIN".
11. Press the down arrow key once, then press the Home key.
12. Press and hold the Shift key and press the Insert key. The two lines that were deleted in step 6 will reappear.
13. Move the cursor below the line that reads "WIN.COM".
14. Press the Enter key and type the following on the blank line:
GOTO MENU
15. Click on File from the Menu Bar.
16. Click on Exit. You will be prompted to save the file; click on YES to save the file. You will return to the DOS prompt.
17. Type EXIT to return to the 4-option menu.
18. Reboot the computer by pressing and holding the Ctrl and Alt keys, then press the Delete key.
Your computer will start at the blue 4-option PS/1 Menu.
Below is a listing of the contents of the START.BAT file as it originally appears on your 2133, 2155, or 2141 PS/1 model.
NOTE: All spaces are indicated with this symbol: ^ DO NOT ACTUALLY TYPE THE SYMBOL ' ^ '
Instead, press the Spacebar where each ^ appears. Further, an indented line indicates a continuation of the previous line.
