TP 770/E/ED - How to install your ACP modem for Windows NT 3.51

Applicable to: World-Wide

This document only applies to ThinkPad 770s that come with the Advanced Communications Processor

Before installing the software on your ThinkPad, make sure that the DSP is enabled. Do this by:

1. From the Program Manager, double-click the ThinkPad (Configuration) group icon. Then double-click the ThinkPad Configuration icon.
2. Click the Modem button. Verify that the modem is enabled. If not, click the Enable radio button.
3. Choose the OK button.
4. Exit Windows NT and restart your computer in order for the changes to take effect.

Follow these steps to install the modem software.
Click here to obtain the diskettes if you do not already have them:

1. Select Run from the Program Manager's File menu.
2. Type a:\setup in the Open field of the Run dialog.
3. Place installation disk #1 in your disk drive.
4. Click OK

NOTE: Non-US users must install, reboot, then run the Country Selection Application and reboot again.

After installing, you will need to set up the modem to work with Windows NT. (Windows NT does not provide a way for the installation program to do this for you automatically.) To setup the modem for Windows NT 3.51, you will need to do the following.

Use the ThinkPad Configuration utility to select a COM port for your modem. Then use the Windows NT Control Panel to define the same port. Once you have completed this procedure, you can use communications applications that do not require Unimodem support.

1. From the Program Manager, double-click the ThinkPad group icon. Then double-click the ThinkPad Configurations icon.
2. Click the Modem button. (It looks like a hand-set phone.)
3. In the Internal Modem dialog box, choose a COM port.
4. Click the OK button.

To verify the COM port that you have chosen, follow these steps:

  1. In the Main group, double-click the Control Panel icon.
  2. Double-click the Ports icon.
  3. Verify that the list of COM ports includes the COM port that you chose in your ThinkPad setup. If not, choose the Add button. If the port is listed, double-click it.
  4. On the Advanced Settings dialog box, choose settings as shown in the following table.

If you have made any changes, you must shut down and restart the computer in order for the changes to take effect.
