Aptiva - Prompting for MS-DOS mode prior to rebooting

Applicable to: United States

Some programs run much better when running in a true DOS environment. Rather than running inside of a window in Windows 95, in which other programs can be running as well, these programs will cause all other programs to close and the computer to reboot. When the computer reboots, it will be in MS DOS Mode.

There are settings that allow you to change how the computer enters DOS Mode. The default way is for a warning message to be displayed prior to entering DOS Mode. This alerts you to close all programs and to save data. The second option is to enter DOS Mode immediately. A third setting that you can configure is a specific CONFIG.SYS file or AUTOEXEC.BAT file that you have tailored for the program.

To make any adjustments to DOS-based programs, from the Explorer you can locate the DOS application. Right-click on the icon, then select Properties. Select the Program tab and press the Advanced button. On the next panel you will find several options. The option labeled Suggest MS-DOS mode as necessary will be checked. This is the item you choose if you want the warning message to be displayed if Windows 95 thinks the program should be run in DOS Mode, and is also the default. If you wish, check the MS-DOS mode and the application will always run in MS-DOS mode when you start it under Windows 95. With this option chosen, you will also have a choice of Warn before entering. When you start with this option selected, Windows 95 will prompt you for permission. Windows 95 will shut down other running applications and reboot to DOS mode, then run your application. When you exit the DOS application, the system will automatically reboot to Windows 95 mode. You also have options for tailoring a special CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT for the application. Otherwise, use the default setup.
