Aptiva - 2144-W30/W31 Disabling the Mwave modem

Applicable to: AP-S

The Aptiva originally had an Mwave modem installed for using the internet, fax and modem. However, an Australian made Banksia fax modem was then installed (only in the 2144-W30) to allow higher quality of the sound (also controlled by the Mwave card). If both the Mwave and Banksia modems are left to be installed, they conflict with each other, resulting in a failure to connect and/or ring with the modem.
The following steps should always be followed to check if the modem is not ringing out.

  1. Reboot the machine to DOS / Windows.
  2. Select (double click) the Mwave group from the desktop.
  3. Double click on Hardware Configuration
  4. A new screen will appear with mention to the modem.
  5. If the I/O settings says anything but Disabled for the modem, click on the down arrow to the right and select Disabled from the list.
  6. Click on the button Update at the bottom of the screen.
  7. If requested to update anything, click on Yes and then OK.
