Aptiva - How to selectively reinstall the gameport in Windows 95

This document outlines a procedure for reinstalling the gameport joystick and its related software on Aptiva systems preloaded with Windows 95. The procedure varies according to what sound card is installed in the system.

Reinstall for Mxx and Axx systems using the Mwave DSP adapter:
1. Click "Start" -> "Settings" -> "Control Panel", and then double-click the "System" icon.

2. The "System Properties" screen will open. Click the tab labeled "Device Manager" to bring it into focus.

3. Device Manager will display a list of all the hardware devices installed in your system. Locate the list entry labeled "Sound, video, and game controllers," and click the "+" sign beside it. A list of sound, video, and game controllers will expand beneath the "Sound, video, and game controllers" entry.

4. Locate the entry for the "Gameport Joystick". Click the entry once to highlight it, and then click "Remove". A "Confirm Device Removal" message box will appear, click "OK". The Gameport Joystick will be removed from the system configuration.

5. Click "Close" to shut down the Device Manager, and restart the computer by clicking "Start" -> "Shutdown" -> "Restart the Computer", and then clicking "Yes".

6. The system will restart. When Windows is finished loading, click "Start"->"Settings"->"Control Panel", and then double-click the "Add New Hardware" icon.

7. The Add New Hardware Wizard will be started. Click "Next" on the startup screen.

8. The following screen will ask whether or not you want Windows to automatically detect your new hardware. Click "No", and then click "Next".

9. The following screen will contain a "Hardware Types" listbox. Scroll down to the "Sound, video, and game controllers" entry, and click it once to highlight it. Click "Next".

10. A list of manufacturers and model types will appear. In the "Manufacturers:" listbox, click "Microsoft". A list of Microsoft supplied hardware devices will appear in the "Models:" listbox; click "Gameport Joystick". Click "Next".

11. An information box will appear notifying you of the hardware resources that the Gameport Joystick will be using. Click "Next".

12. Click "Finish" on the following screen to complete the hardware installation.

13. A message box will appear stating that you will need to restart your computer to complete the installation. Click "Yes" to restart your computer. The Gameport Joystick has now been reinstalled.

Reinstall for Cxx and Sxx systems using the Mwave DSP adapter:
1. Click "Start" -> "Settings" -> "Control Panel", and then double-click the "System" icon.

2. The "System Properties" screen will open. Click the tab labeled "Device Manager" to bring it into focus.

3. Device Manager will display a list of all the hardware devices installed in your system. Locate the list entry labeled
"Sound, video, and game controllers", and click the "+" sign beside it. A list of sound, video, and game controllers will expand beneath the "Sound, video, and game controllers" entry.

4. Locate the entry for the "MWave Gameport Joystick", (On Cxx systems), or the "Gameport Joystick" (On Sxx systems). Click the entry once to highlight it, and then click "Remove". A "Confirm Device Removal" message box will appear, click "OK". The Gameport Joystick will be removed from the system configuration.

5. Click "Close" to shut down the Device Manager, and restart the computer by clicking "Start" -> "Shutdown" -> "Restart the Computer", and then clicking "Yes".

6. When Windows restarts it will automatically redetect, and reinstall the software for, the Gameport Joystick. The Gameport Joystick has now been reinstalled.

Reinstall for systems using the Crystal Audio sound card:
1. Click "Start"->"Settings"->"Control Panel", and then double-click the "System" icon.

2. The "System Properties" screen will open. Click the tab labeled "Device Manager" to bring it into focus.

3. Device Manager will display a list of all the hardware devices installed in your system. Locate the list entry labeled "Sound, video, and game controllers", and click the "+" sign beside it. A list of sound, video, and game controllers will expand beneath the "Sound, video, and game controllers" entry.

4. Locate the entry for the "Crystal PnP Audio System Joystick". Click the entry once to highlight it, and then click "Remove". A "Confirm Device Removal" message box will appear, click "OK". The joystick will be removed from the system configuration.

5. Click "Close" to shut down the Device Manager, and restart the computer by clicking "Start" -> "Shutdown" -> "Restart the Computer", and then clicking "Yes".

6. When Windows restarts it will automatically redetect, and reinstall the software for, the Crystal PnP Audio System Joystick. The Audio System Joystick has now been reinstalled.
