PS/1-Aptiva - Creating multiple partitions on a hard drive

Applicable to: United States

For DOS versions 4.x thru 7.x

The following instructions let you partition your hard drive into multiple partitions (or drives).

*** IMPORTANT: ALL data/programs will be lost when performing this operation! Please make sure that you have created your Recovery and Backup disks. You will also need to perform a current backup of your hard drive or files, if you have important data files that you wish to keep. ***

1. Completely exit Windows and go to the DOS prompt. Do not use the DOS prompt icon.

2. Type: FDISK and press [Enter].

3. Choose option #4 to Display partition information. Take note of all the partitions listed, including partition number and Type. Press [Esc] to continue. If there is more than one partition listed, do the following:

a) Choose option #3 to Delete partition....
b) Based on the Type of the partitions that you noted in Step #3, select #1-4 for deleting the appropriate partitions.
c) When finished deleting all partitions, press [Esc] to return to the FDISK Options menu.

4. Choose option #1 to Create DOS partition....

5. Choose option #1 to Create Primary DOS partition to act as drive C. FDISK will offer the entire disk capacity as the primary partition, by default. Answer N to the confirmation prompt if you wish to create more than one partition on your hard drive. Then enter the size that you wish drive C to be, either in MB or as a percentage, and return to the FDISK Options menu.

6. Choose option #2 to Set active partition to make C the active partition that will be bootable.

7. Place your Recovery disk into drive A and reboot (CTRL+ALT+DELETE) your computer.

8. Choose Go to DOS prompt and format the C drives. Issue the following commands to do this:

FORMAT C: /U /S

9. Reboot (CTRL+ALT+DELETE) your computer.

10. Choose to Restore the original software. The Recovery program will ask you some questions. The Recovery program will install all the original software onto the C drive.

11. Remove the recovery disk and reboot your computer.

Only perform steps 12-20 if you are creating more than one partition on your hard disk. Otherwise, skip to step 21.

12. Completely exit Windows and go to the DOS prompt. Do not use the DOS prompt icon.

13. Type: FDISK and press [Enter].

14. Choose option #1 to Create DOS partition....

15. Choose option #2 to Create Extended DOS partition. Again, FDISK will offer the rest of the hard disk as the size. Answer Y. Then Create your Logical DOS partitions. Each additional partition will be given a drive letter starting with D (i.e., D, E, F, etc.).

16. Press [Esc] and exit FDISK.

17. Reboot (CTRL+ALT+DELETE) your computer.

18. Completely exit Windows and go to the DOS prompt. If you wish, for step 19, you may use the DOS prompt icon.

19. Use the following command for the remaining drives that you may have created (drive = the drive that you wish to format):

FORMAT drive: /U

Press [Enter] after each command and wait for the DOS prompt to appear before issuing the next command.

20. Now do a directory of every drive and see that everything seems to be functioning properly. You should not receive any files listed any of the drives that you just formatted.

21. Restore any backups that you made before FDISKing. If you have upgraded your DOS level, you may need to upgrade again..
