GENERAL PRODUCT/SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

Refer to the technical descriptions listed in RFA 27982 (PC Server 315) for technical descriptions of this product. The only change to this new model over the 2GB hard disk models previously announced is a 4.33GB hard disk is standard rather than a 2.16GB hard disk.

OPERATING AND POWER CONTROLS, INDICATORS AND PROCEDURES

Operating, power controls, indicators, and procedures are explained in the PC Server System Library as shipped with the product.

DATA SECURITY CHARACTERISTICS

Security and auditability features of these servers are as follows:

o Power-on and privileged- access password functions provide controls of who has access to the data and server setup program on the server.

o Secure hard disk and diskette drive feature allows administrator to inhibit I/O to selected users through the Setup Utility

o A mechanical lock allows the user to lock the system front cover door to prevent unauthorized personnel access to diskette drives or removable media.

o Selectable boot sequence can be used to prevent unauthorized installation of software or removal of data from the diskette drive.

o Tie-down capability is achieved by utilizing a common U-bolt attached to the back frame.

o Operation without a keyboard and display are supported once the server is configured with the appropriate network operating system. This minimizes the risk of unauthorized persons tampering with the system software and configuration.

Limitations:

Small Computer System Interface (SCSI), as defined in the American National Standard Institute (ANSI) standard X3.131-1986, provides a port for the attachment of external devices. The SCSI bus may be internal or external to the system unit. This model contains an PC Server Ultra Wide SCSI PCI Adapter and is in conformance with this standard by having an external port.

This server with this adapter also conforms with ANSI SCSI-2 and works with SCSI-2 fast or fast/wide devices. It is a customer's responsibility to ensure that the server is secure, or has a security cover, to prevent sensitive data from being removed via external SCSI ports.

COMPATIBILITY:

The PC Server 315 system contains licensed system programs that include set configuration, set features, and test programs. Some of these system programs are stored in the system ROM, while others are contained on diskette. System BIOS is loaded from a "flash" EEPROM into system memory. This BIOS provides the instructions and interfaces designed to support the standard features of the PC Server 315 and to maintain compatibility with many software programs currently operating under PC DOS and OS/2 on PC Servers; however, due to the higher speed of the processors in these models, some timing-sensitive software may require modification.

To view detailed information on the Internet about IBM and non-IBM devices, adapters, software, and network operating systems supported with PC Servers, go to:

http://www.us.pc.ibm.com/compat/

Also, customers can contact their IBM representative, Authorized Remarketer, or IBM PC HelpWare or refer to the IBM Sales Manual for information on the compatibility of hardware and software for IBM PC Servers. The Sales Manual is updated periodically as new features and options are announced that support these servers.

LIMITATIONS:

o A mouse cannot be used with the IBM QuietTouch Keyboard with TrackPoint II (84-key).

o If a power failure occurs during a flash update, the system board may be unusable. A service call would be required to replace the system board.

o PC Server 315 models contain four dedicated PCI card slots, one PCI/ISA combination card slot, and two dedicated ISA card slots. Full-length cards can be installed in all slots except the top dedicated PCI slot and the second from the top PCI/ISA combination slot.

o Because these systems are designed as industry standard servers using an industry standard floppy diskette drive interface, the location of the media eject button on the diskette drive and the lack of support for an electronic eject 2.88MB diskette drive option may be a limitation for customers with certain disabilities.

o This server contains a PC Server Ultra Wide SCSI PCI Adapter that has two internal and one external SCSI connectors. Up to 15 SCSI-2 devices can be attached and supported from any connector. Any two SCSI connectors can be used for attachment of SCSI devices; however, when internal SCSI devices are installed to either one of the internal connectors, only one SCSI device can then be supported from the external connector.

o When using UltraSCSI mode with the PC Server Ultra Wide SCSI PCI Adapter refer to the ANSI SCSI-3 FAST-20 document for cable lengths and other technical requirements to determine if the configuration can be supported. Information on this subject can also be found in the PC Server 315 System Library.

o Customers should use the version of ServerGuide that ships with the system, or a later version, to load software and drivers. Earlier versions of ServerGuide may not be compatible with the server.

Refer to the SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS section for operating systems limitations.

CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES:

The PC Server 315 is designated as a customer setup model. Customer setup instructions are shipped with the system.

SERVERGUIDE ORDERING AND INSTALLATION INFORMATION

ServerGuide is available when shipped as part of the PC Server 310 and 315 systems and is not sold separately.

CONFIGURATION INFORMATION:

PC Server 315 models are cabled internally with a 5-drop, 8-bit SCSI cable. The end connector of this cable is attached to the internal 8-bit connector of the PC Server Ultra Wide SCSI PCI Adapter. The last connector is used to attach the 4.33GB Ultra SCSI Hard Disk Drive that also provides termination of the SCSI bus. One of the remaining four drops is attached to the standard CD-ROM.

Customers wanting to install 16-bit SCSI devices can install a PC Server 5-Drop SCSI F/W Internal Cable (94G7524) to the PC Server Ultra Wide SCSI PCI Adapter and re-connect the standard SCSI CD-ROM through a 68- to 50-pin converter included with the 5-drop cable option. If retaining the 4.33GB 8-bit SCSI drive, a 68- to 50-pin converter (PN 32G3925) must be ordered to connect the drive to the 16-bit cable.

CABLE ORDERS:

A 100/10Mbps Ethernet PCI Adapter is standard with the PC Server 315 model. This adapter includes a single RJ-45 connector for attachment to 10Base-T and 100Base-TX networks. An adapter cable is not included with the server. To connect the 100/10 PCI Ethernet Adapter to a repeater or switch, use an unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable with RJ-45 connectors at both ends. For 100Mbps operation, Category 5 cabling must be used. For 10Mbps operation, Category 3, or better, cabling must be used.

There are no additional cables necessary as cables/power cords are provided for power, keyboard, mouse, and IBM monitor connections.

INSTALLABILITY:
These models require at least 30 minutes for installation. Installation includes unpacking, setting up, and powering on the system. Additional time is required to install an operating system and other adapters or features.

USEABILITY CHARACTERISTICS

By following the setup instructions, the user attaches the keyboard and monitor. The power cord for the display and system unit is then plugged into an electrical outlet. Power is then turned on the monitor, then the system unit. When the system unit is powered on, it performs a power-on self-test (POST) that takes approximately 60 seconds. After POST has completed successfully, installation of software may then be accomplished.
