TP 701 - Modem not responding in application

Applicable to: World-Wide

Subject :
The following is a compilation of data regarding the proper setup and operation of the 701 c/cs internal modem.

A good initialization string for the modem is:
ATQ0V1E1S0=0
This initialization string comes from a document on FaxBack. Note the S0=0 at the end. This tells the modem to never answer an incomming call. This should be changed to S0=#, where # is the number of rings to answer. If you happen to be in England or any other country where the phone system uses double rings, then the # should be an EVEN number; 2, 4, etc, otherwise, the modem will pick up in the middle of the next ring.

FIFO should be set to ON for any application being used. There is a line in the 386ENH section of the SYSTEM.INI file which reads
COM1FIFO=ON
This is the default setting but it could be set to OFF by an program during its installation so it should be checked.

Flow control should be set to Xon/Xoff. There are instances where flow control was set to RTS/CTS in an application and this caused the modem to lose the connection. This is not always the case but Flow Control should be checked if connections cannot be maintained.

Another initialization string which is useful is AT&F but there has been more success with the init string listed above; specifically with pcANYWHERE.

These are recommendations for trouble shooting the modem and by no means the only way to 'fix' and issue. All have been used successfully on numerous 701 c/cs modem calls.
