PCMCIA WaveRunner ISDN/Analog Modem - Difficulties occurring in laptop systems
Applicable to: World-Wide
Symptom:
Difficulties occurring using a IBM WaveRunner ISDN PCMCIA card in a laptop computer.
Some problem indicators are:
- no problems using other PCMCIA cards (which indicates that the Computer and Socket Services are configured OK.)
- the installation of the WaveRunner software goes OK.
- after rebooting, the machine freezes during the running of the initialization batch file mwpcms.bat
- when the WaveRunner card is ejected the laptop runs normally.
Explanation:
The problem exists because of a conflict between the Cirrus Logic PCMCIA controller chip default settings and the CardSoft driver default settings. The chip gets confused when a certain range of addresses are used. The conflicting range of addresses may be assigned to the WaveRunner which in effect causes data to be put into the I/O address instead of memory.
Resolution:
The problem is corrected by restricting the address in the SystemSoft card and socket services software and by making the following changes:
1. Edit the CSALLOC.INI file and ensure the following:
MEM=D800-DFFF
MEMEXCLUDE=D000-D7FF
2. Edit the config.sys and ensure that EMM386.EXE has an exclusion for D800-DFFF
3. The system.ini should have EMMExclude=D800-DFFF in the Ç386ENHÇ section
