Aptiva - How to create icons in Windows 3.1

Applicable to: United States

There are at least two ways to recreate lost icons. The first method uses a tool called Your Software which is included on most PS/1 systems and some Aptiva models. Your Software guides you through locating the application for which you wish to create an icon and then provides a selection of icons to pick from. (The first icon in the selection is usually the icon that originally came with the application.)
The second method, using Windows File Manager, is quicker and more direct. In the example steps below, the icon for MS Works has been lost and needs to be recreated:

1. Maximize the Program Manager desktop.

2. Open a File Manager window - size and position it so that the group folders on the Program Manager desktop are still visible, particularly the MS Works group icon.

3. In the left portion of the File Manager window, find and open the MSWORKS folder.

4. In the right portion of the File Manager window, locate the file that launches MS Works (in this case, MSWORKS.EXE).

5. Click and hold the left mouse button on the MSWORKS.EXE file icon.

6. Keeping the mouse button depressed, drag the selected file icon from the File Manager window over onto the MS Works group icon and release the mouse button.

A new MS Works icon will be present inside the MS Works group window. The same procedure can be repeated to create an icon for any Windows application by selecting the file, in the File Manager window, that is used to launch the application.
