If you are very familiar with SCSI, hardware, and the installation process, continue with 3.0 Quick installation instructions for experienced users. If not, continue with 4.0 Detailed installation instructions.

3.0 Quick installation instructions for experienced users
1. Set up a RAID array with a 300MB A0 RAID logical drive as the boot device another RAID logical for the remaining freespace. Initialize and Synchronize.

2. FDISK the drive. Create an active primary partition on the 300MB A0 drive consisting of the entire drive and set it active.

3. Install PC DOS 7 (optional components not required). When complete, run UINSTALL from the DOS directory on the RAID Option Diskette (see section 2.0) for CD ROM support.

4. Start the NetWare install from CD #1 by running Install. RAID drivers are located in the NetWare directory on the RAID Option Disk. (IBMRAID4.DSK and RAIDASP4.DSK)

5. It is mandatory to apply all fixes and patches from http://support.novell.com for correct operation.

4.0 Detailed installation instructions
Follow the instructions below in sequence.

4.1 Setting up the BIOS
Note: Follow the on screen directions on the following disk operations:

1. Boot to the BIOS upgrade diskette (listed in section 2.0) and flash the system to revision 28A or later.

2. Boot to the RAID BIOS/Firmware upgrade diskette (listed in section 2.0) and flash the controller.

3 Press F1 to enter CMOS, then load defaults from the menu. Save and exit.

4.2 Running the Micro Channel Reference Disk
Note: If no Micro Channel cards are installed, there is no need to run the Reference Disk. However if a Micro Channel card is added, a 00165 configuration error will occur on boot and the system will go into the CMOS configuration menu:

1. CMOS will redisplay the 00165 error. Select to continue. Another error occurs, continue again. You are now at the main CMOS menu. Select Micro Channel Configuration. CMOS now prompts for the Reference Disk (place it in the floppy drive). The system will now reboot to the Reference Disk.

2. Error 00165 reoccurs. Select Y to run automatic configuration when prompted. If the Reference Disk does not have an Adapter Description File (ADF) for your hardware, it will prompt for the option diskette. When auto configuration is complete, the Reference Disk menu can be used to inspect the settings. Verify your Network Interface Cards (NIC) are set to the proper speed if they are adjustable in the Reference Disk.

4.3 Setting up the array
IBM PCI F/W RAID or IBM Micro Channel F/W Streaming RAID controller only:

1. Ignore any errors in the configuration on the initial boot of the controller out of the box.

2. Boot to the RAID configuration utility disk.

3. Select #2, Start RAID Configuration Program.

4. Select #3, Create Delete Array.

5. If an array is currently defined (any ONL drives to the right):
a. Select #3, Delete Disk Array
b. Follow the instructions at the bottom of the screen to delete it.

6. Select #4, Create Disk Array:
Make all drives you desire in the array ONL with the exception of Hot Spares.

7. Select #5, Define Logical Drive:
a. Select the RAID level desired.
b. DO NOT ACCEPT FREESPACE. Change the size to 300, following the directions at the bottom of the screen.

8. Repeat the above step, with the exception of accepting the freespace.

Note: The array A should now have a logical drive (A0) of 300MB and logical drive (A1) with the remainder.

9. Press Esc to return to the previous menu.

10. Select #4, Initialize/Synchronize array.

11. Select #2, Initialize Disk Array:
a. Highlight both A0 and A1 logical drives with the spacebar.
b. Start Initialization. Allow to complete.

12. Select #3, Synchronize Disk Array:
a. Highlight both A0 and A1 logical drives with the spacebar.
b. Start Synchronization. Allow to complete.

13. You are now ready for NOS installation.

Note: A Raid Configuration Backup Diskette is recommended when array configuration is complete. Refer to the RAID Option Diskette menu to create one.

Warning: The IBM PCI F/W controller does not autosynchronize. Perform manual synchronization from the RAID Option Diskette on a weekly basis.

4.4 Installing the NOS
1. Boot your PC DOS 7 installation disk. Select Y when asked if you wish to install.

2. When PC DOS asks you to partition the drive, select Allocate some free hard disk space for PC DOS.

3. FDISK now starts. Select #1, Create DOS partition or Logical DOS Drive (Current fixed disk drive should be defaulted to 1). Select #1, Create Primary DOS Partition. When asked 'Do you want to use the maximum available size...' enter Y. Press Esc to return to the main FDISK screen.

4. Select #5, Change Current Fixed Disk. Press 2 for the drive number. Select #1, Create DOS partition.... Select #1, Create Primary DOS Partition. Press N to the next question. Press 5 for the size and press Enter. Press Esc twice to exit FDISK. System now reboots (leave the install disk in the diskette drive).

5. Repeat step 1. When the screen prompts, select Format Partition. After completion, press Enter at the Welcome screen. Press Enter again after verifying the date, time, etc.

6. A list is presented of optional components. Ensure all options say NO and the path to the DOS install target is C:\DOS. Select Continue Setup. Follow on screen directions until DOS asks you to remove all disks and press any key to restart.

7. After booting to the C prompt, type the following:

DEL C:\CONFIG.SYS <enter>
DEL C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT <enter>

Press Ctrl Alt Del to reboot.

8. Enter the date and time. Place the RAID Option Diskette in the diskette drive (see section 2.0). Type the following:

A:\DOS\UINSTALL <enter>

For the RAID Driver Installation Program, accept defaults for every question it asks (usually by pressing Enter). Press F3 at the final screen. You are now at the command prompt. Remove the diskette.

Press Ctrl Alt Del to reboot.

9. After rebooting, type the following at the C prompt:

E CONFIG.SYS

Enter the following lines at the end of the CONFIG.SYS file:

FILES=40
BUFFERS=30
STACKS=9,256
LASTDRIVE=Z

Press F4 to save and exit. Press Ctrl Alt Del to reboot.

10 After rebooting, place the NetWare 4.11 CD #1 in the CD ROM drive and switch to the drive letter of the CD ROM (it was echoed on boot when MSCDEX loaded). Type INSTALL and press Enter.

11. Select the English language. Press Enter repeatedly to view the license agreement. At the NetWare install screen, select NetWare Server Installation. Select the NetWare 4.11 product and press Enter. Choose Simple Installation.

Note: A warning message appears concerning the size of the C drive. Ignore it and Continue Anyway.

12. Enter the desired ServerName. File copy now begins. When copying is complete, INSTALL.NLM is loaded. Select to install SMP if two processors are installed. (The correct driver is MPS14.PSM.) INSTALL.NLM will now define the RAID controller as PCI Disk Controller. Press Enter to specify the driver. Press INS on the next screen. Insert the RAID Option Diskette in the drive (section 2). Press Enter to scan it. From the presented list, select IBMRAID4.DSK. After it transfers, select yes to add another driver. Select RAIDASP4.DSK. Select Yes to save existing file. Press Enter after it has saved it. Repeat for ASPITRAN.*. Ignore any error message about backing up ASPITRAN. Follow the on screen directions to continue (select appropriate drivers for your NIC card when prompted). Control will be passed to the system console to load the RAID drivers. Press Enter. File copy and setup continues. The install will prompt to Delete Non Boot Partitions. Select to do so. The system will then mount the CD ROM drive in NetWare. File transfer proceeds from the CD ROM when mounted. Make appropriate choices and insert the license disk when prompted. After the transfer, you should be at a working NetWare prompt.

13. At this point the installation varies according to your choices for setting up the server. Follow the on screen directions to complete the install and for adding additional components and features.

Note: The current patch level for NetWare 4.11 is required for correct operation. Download all advertised patches and fixes from http://support.novell.com to complete the installation.
