IBM IntelliStation M Pro (Type 6889) - Fails to connect to Ethernet network

Applicable to: World-Wide

SYMPTOM:
IBM Intellistation M Pro 6889 systems may intermittently fail to connect to an ethernet network. The system does not display a POST error code, however, the ethernet setting in the system's Setup Utility (CMOS) shows that the ethernet adapter has been disabled. The only indication of the problem will be displayed when the operating system or application software displays a message reporting that the system cannot connect to the network.

Once the failure symptom has occurred, the AC line cord must be removed from the AC receptacle and replugged to reset the system unit. Performing a warm-boot (Ctrl/Alt+Del) or cold boot (on/off power button) will not reset the system. The failure symptom will remain until the power cord is removed.

PROBLEM ISOLATION AIDS:
This highly intermittent problem only occurs on systems that routinely have the AC power disconnected from the system via a circuit breaker, power strip or by removing the AC line cord from the receptacle. Systems that are powered-off using the power switch on the system unit will not exhibit the failure.

Only systems with an Astec power supply, FRU P/N01K9866, Assembly P/N01K9855, and barcode header J15X8 are affected.

Some systems contain a power supply made for IBM by API, FRU P/N01K9866, Assembly P/N01K9865, barcode header J15D1. These power supplies are not affected by this problem.

FIX:
If the system is exhibiting the failure symptom stated above, reset the system and retest for the failure. If the failure reoccurs, replace the power supply with FRU P/N01k9866. FRU stock contains only API power supplies.
