TP 365X/XD - OS/2 ESS audio address does not change after initialize

Applicable to: World-Wide

SYMPTOM:
The IO Port address for the ESS Audio Chip does not change at the ThinkPad Utility screen under OS/2 after CMOS was Initialized by Easy setup.

CONFIGURATION:
The following problem recreation information is included as it offers the best explanation of where the failure to change occurs.

Re-creation procedure:
1. Start ThinkPad Features and change audio address from 220 to 240.
2. Shutdown and re-start the OS/2
3. Start ThinkPad Feature and confirm the audio address is set to 240.
4. Shutdown the system and go to Easy setup menu.
5. Go to the config menu and execute initialize.
6. Restart the system and start ThinkPad Features.
7. Audio address is set as "240". <===== Problem: it should be 220.

To reset Audio I/O setting to 220, just initializing CMOS is not sufficient. This is due to Audio driver's design. The ESS driver does not get I/O address value from CMOS directly but uses the parameter in CONFIG.SYS.

Example: ES1688DD.SYS /B:240 /D:1 /I:5 /M330,5 /N:ES16881 $
The ThinkPad Utility in OS/2 displays this CONFIG.SYS setting because audio driver actually uses this value. Of course, if some value is selected in utility it sets the value to both CMOS and CONFIG.SYS.

SOLUTION:
When a user wants to reset Audio setting, as a first step, initialize CMOS, then as a second step modify the CONFIG.SYS statement shown above.

1) Initialize CMOS <-- CMOS is reset to 220
2) Open ThinkPad Features, Audio advanced dialog, and change the address to 220
3) Press OK <-- CMOS and CONFIG.SYS is updated
4) Shutdown and Reboot

To set Audio address to 240,
1) Open ThinkPad Features, Audio advanced dialog
2) Select 240 I/O and press OK
3.) Shutdown and reboot the computer
